I’ve been invited to fish for sturgen at the end of sept. I have never done it before but I know we will be fishing from shore below dam tailraces. Jim (the guy who invited me) gave me some 8 oz sinkers to practice casting with. They are to heavy for the rods I have or he rod is not long enough to get a good enough lever.
Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations on a good rod for this? I have a 4/0 and a 6/0 reel so I’m ok in that dept, but the rods I have are for stand up tuna and bottom fishing for grouper.
Find a downed telephone pole, and have Utwalleye put some guides on it![;)]
But really, look for some heavy duty surf rods or the longest saltwater rods you can find. I’ve had good luck with Cabela’s Saltstriker rods for tarpon. Might also see what the biggest broomstick Ugly Stik has.
Hands down the Ugly stick 12’er is the best. I dropped a 60# rock on mine and it didn’t do anything to it. It just bounced off. They are very sensitive for their size. About $65 at Sportsmans. Are you fishing Hagerman?
That might be a little hard to turn that pole on a wrapper.
get a rod with an extended butt section, you’ll want it for levridge.
later chuck
In searching for Kokanee Rods that our fine friends here at BFT suggested, I came across a Casting Rod made by Lamiglas just for Sturgeon. I dont know if your interested but here is a link the the site that cariies the rod. CLICK HERE
I hope this helps and have a good trip,
Hey Troll,
If Kentofnsl does not see this thread, send him a PM - he fishes for sturgeon alot and has good knowledge of what works well.
I would suggest the Okuma Longitude Surf LC-S-1002H-1 or the Okuma Blue Diamond BD-S-1002MH-1. Both rods are rated for Sturgeon and can easily handle 8oz weights. They can also accomodate the 4/0 Senator reel as well as the 114H.![]()

I just keep my eyes open at the various fishing stores and look at their largest rods. I have purchased several rods that have a fairly fast rod tip and are rated for line up to about 35 or 40 pounds. I have found that they will handle even heavier line. On the surfing rods I have cut the handle down so that they aren’t so long. Before I started doing that they were painful to use fighting a large sturgeon.[pirate]
I’ve decided on the big Ugly Stick. The 10’6" that handeles 4-12 oz lures. It’s a little more than I wanted to spend but if it’s not more than you want to spend why but it?
I own an Ugly Stik that I use for sturgeon fishing. It should treat you well.
