I was planning to hit the Berry tomorrow (9/17) morning in my tube. But, I realized that tomorrow is my son’s birthday (he’ll be 9) and I know he would love to go fishing on his b-day. So we’ll be shore fishing instead of from my tube.
I was planning to try out some of the tips I learned here for using jigs at Strawberry.
Now my question is, can I still use most of those techniques from the shore?
This depends on where you fish. Unless it gets deep right off shore (soldier creek) you are going to have a heck of a time with all the moss. Also the jig method at the berry is a verticle deal mostly.
Honestly, if I were you I would have a rod out with a minnow on the bottom and cast high floating lures like floating rapalas. Or take the tube and take turns out on it. The fish are really eating the jigs but they are out in 30+ feet of water.
I would agree with Weekend Warrior, those are good tips. Also, if you really want to Jig fish try fishing a white tube jig under a slip bobber with a peice of chub. Try and set your rig to keep the Jig about 5 feet off the bottom, then use a slow, twitch, pause retrieve back to you. If you don’t hook up try shortening you leader. This has worked for me from shore and is the closest thing to vertical jigging I know of. Start as slow as possible, most times I will chuck that rig out and fish it alomost like bait, letting drift with an occasional twitch here and there, while throw stick baits on my second rod. Good luck to you, let us know how it went. I hope your son has a great Birthday.
I was up at chicken creek east last saturday and just used a minnow about 12-18" under a red and white bobber. keep your pole in your hand so you can set the hook right away I missed a lot of fish even when they were dragging the bobber around.
I don’t do alot of fishing from the bank however we were are the berry last weekend and I saw a guy catching fish consistently at renegade. His location: on the far east side of the parking lot there is a point that goes down into the lake. he was off that point. you will see it if you drive into the parking lot. I seen that he had a bober on it. not sure what he was using for the bait. powerbait you will catch some rainbows but I like to use a white tube jig. sometimes we jig it strait down and sometimes we cast it out and jig it back to us. you could do that from the bank. Tips on bait are: shrimp (I love them) or 1/2 of a minnow. (don’t let the hook show or they wont hit it hard). Good luck, hope your trip if fun.
