We headed up to Strawberry on Saturday. It was absolutely beautiful. We launched out of Strawberry Bay Marina at approximately 6:30. Went out to the island and started fishing the west side. Caught our first fish (the first of many cookie cutter 18-20 inch cut throats) on the second cast with a rainbow trout pattern LC Pointer. Later caught a 15 inch rainbow on a ghost minnow Pointer.
Most fish were caught in 10-20 ft of water. Dropshotting a 3 inch Gulp Minnow or a 3 inch Power Smelt worked very well.
Dad caught fish trolling pop gear and a Rapala jointed minnow trolled at about 18’ deep. We also had one of those “the one that got away” stories. While trolling, something hit the pop gear and jointed minnow–something big. It stripped drag and we thought we might be hung up on the bottom, but we were in about 60’ of water a ways out from the Ladders area. Then the rod shook a few times–it was definitly a fish, not the bottom. A couple more head shakes and snap–the leader broke off. Probably too much resistance with all the pop gear and were only using 10 lb leader. That was definitly a lesson learned. Anyway, if someone catches a big fish up there with a jointed minnow in its mouth, send it back to me![;)]
Anyway, it was a beautiful day, didn’t catch huge numbers of fish, but getting into double digits for a couple of amateurs like us was a great day. Dad even caught a couple of small rainbows to take home and eat. No pictures as there wasn’t anything all that “picture worthy.”
Yep, I too was up there Saturday. Best day of fishing I have had in some time!! We boated four nice bows is the AM in Ren Bay on worm and power bait. Then played until about 4:00pm and whoa… Game On!!! We boated about 20 Nice fat bows trolling around the mud creek side in about 20’ of water. It was so hot I was having my kids count once the reels were lock after line out. They were hitting about about every count of 10…
