So, I took a friend to the berry this afternoon… not so great. Action was pretty slow, and condition s were horrible. Started with some snowmobilers telling us not to go out, because they just got saved by Search & Rescue, Well, we went anyways. Not horrible on the flat, but once we headed down, we were going through waist deep snow. Fishing was pretty slow. I caught 2 cutts and 2 bows, and my friend landed 1 of each in a little over 2 hours. Good luck to anyone trying to reach the ice… it was rough coming back up. The fish were decent sized (largest 24 1/2", but i am not sure it was worth it)
I was thinking of going out in the next couple of days. Where were you at? Did you get stuck?
My sled doesn’t have long lugs on the track so I definitely don’t want to get stuck.
Nice fish. We are heading up this morning. if we can get into a couple fish then I will be happy.
In addition to where did you access the ice, how thick was the ice?
I was on the soldier creek side… accessed the lake on the first corner going down the road (where everyone usually goes down). The drifts are intense… and to answer your question if I got stuck, you have to define stuck. The lot was plowed (and filled with sled trailers) so it was difficult to get in and park, but not stuck. Had to walk down the hill (no trail left) in front of my sled and hold the front up, because the nose of it was diving into the powder, but not stuck. AND… I am a pretty young guy in decent shape, and walking up that hill falling into waist deep snow (felt stuck, but wasn’t) Took me 45 minutes to get up that hill and back to the lot. The wind was blowing the snow everywhere. Our tracks disappeared behind us when we got about 10 steps away. Hope this helps… I don’t think I will be back conditions change a bit, because I don’t have snow shoes. Good Luck all, and you have been warned… it’s rough out there.
P.S. Didn’t check ice conditions anywhere else (12+ inches where I fished) but the lake is capped everywhere I saw, except past that first bay on the soldier creek side… it’s still open water)
