Still at Henry's

I’m new here, but have been following the forum closely since I found it, about a month ago. My wife and I fished Henry’s the first part of July and didn’t catch a thing, after reading here I found out I didn’t have a clue.
We are going back next weekend better prepared, thanks to your posts.
It is suppose to storm this week, my question is, as long as the lake calms down, do you think the fishing will be good next weekend?

The fishing should get better as the weather cools. Don’t know if you flyfish or bait fish but just keep trying its a tuff lake and them fish can be picky .

Absolutely!
Many years ago, I asked myself why we kept going back to a lake that we had no clue about.
Then read Bill Shiess book and one fish, then another.
There are times that the lake is super easy. Right now is not the case.
Shallow lake and warm temps.
There is talk of snow next week. If that happens, the fishing is going to be awesome. It’s just you we will be worried about then.

Looks like I may have to get up there soon. Nice looking fish FG.
I have been fishing high mountain lakes and small streams lately. Caught some Brookies, Rainbow’s, Fine Spotted Cuts and Yellowstone Cuts, Grayling and Goldens a week ago. Now I can mark the Golden’s and Grayling off of my list to catch. I was real surprised the fight the Golden’s put up. Quite amazing for their size.
Should be cool after this week since it is suppose to snow Wednesday. Hope it warms back up into the 60’s or low 70’s again after the storm. I need something big on the fly rod this year.

Thanks for the encouragement. I just got the book by Bill he makes it sound easy, I am sure it would be if you were as smart as he is and spent that much time on the lake fishing. If the weather settles down after this next storm, my wife and I will try to get up there next weekend.
Where can I find some of the flys that he has in his book? If I have to tie them myself, it will be another sightseeing trip learning from watching other people catch fish, but you just cant beat the scenery or being able to relax.

I might just have to go up there this week sometime. Wed and Thurs highs upper 40’s BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR lows in the 20’s should cool it down. Then again stealhead #'s are lokking killer might have th do a clearwater trip 1st of october. yep sounds like a good trip either way

Try BS flies in Island Park at Ponds Lodge. Also in I.F. you could probably find the same ones or similar patterns at Jimmy’s Flyshop

Thanks for the info!!!

BS flies by ponds lodge…all of his flies are there. Jimmy’s in Idaho Falls will have a few
as well. I recommend-since you tie-to tie some up yourself as close as you can to what
his patterns look like. I’ll be up there the second week in Oct…what days will you be up t
there?? boat or pontoons?

FG, What is the water temp there and have you heard or seen any really big ones being landed? Seems like this year the bigger hybrids have been elusive there for some reason. A friend of mine is there all next week. Maybe colder weather will help the bite.

The water temp was in the upper 50’s, but remember it was unusually HOT up there.

Okay, not a Hybrid, but a Cutt a friend of mine landed the last day we were there.

and here is a hybrid:

I ended up going to 8 lb fluoro from my normal 6 lb, because these guys were snapping me. Not at the knots!
I was spooled flat out three times only to have them just snap the line!
I had one to my net that was over 30". I scooped the head but was to big for the net. Rolled over and dove to break me off.

They are in there for sure!!!

Depending on how the weather turns out, it will either be the weekend of the 3rd or 10th.
I have a small aluminum boat with a 10 hp motor. Won’t go very fast, but it is very safe.

As others have said cooler temps usually =faster fishing. However, any major change in temps can put the fish in shock for a few days. I have no idea what will happent this weekend, but I would guess the beginning of next week will be awesome.

Windriver

That should work!!! Good luck, and pm sent

I tried to stop in at BS Flies last saturday, but they were closed, when are they open, I want that book everybody keeps talking about!

Check Sportsman’s. They have had it at times.

I should be there on the 10th…just make sure if it’s windy to stick close to a shore
where you can get off the water[pirate].-it’s not worth the risk when those waves
start kicking up! I really think the second weekend will prove to be a better choice due
to the cold temp snap next week…might still have fish down. Good luck!

Jimmys has had the book. You can find his flies at that fly shop on the highway in ashton. I have also seen his patterns at the Shell station in Hibbard “Mother Hibbards.”

Windriver

Lynn told me, the young man they had running the shop, was in a car accident. He is recovering fine, but the shop doesn’t have regular hours as of now.
Jimmy’s would be my choice. The camp ground we stayed at “RED ROCK” had them as well, but they might be closed also.

Idaho Irresistables tackle shop in Ashton as Wind River mentioned has a good selection of Bill’s flies and I am pretty sure he has the book also. Since it is along the way to the lake is an easy place to stop in for me.

FG- Nice pictures and great reports from there on your trip. Wish I was up there about now.
