STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod Fishing- 3/29/03
Last Sunday, B-Fast’s HACKER fished the deep-water on the east side of the bank.
The group limited-out on medium and large cod by mid-morning using clam-baits.
This has been the rule for the past few weeks with other species not in evidence. On Sunday, nothing less than 10 pounds came over the rails. Numerous cod in the 15-20 pound class grabbed the clam baits. The pool winner was 33 pounds.
Dennis Zervos’s group from Brooklyn, NY had the same results on Friday. Skimmer-clams were again the best producer. Cod between 10 and 30 pounds filled the boxes with very few throw-backs. Presently, what the regulations preclude retaining in numbers, the anglers are making up for in size. A 30-pound steaker took the pool on Dennis’s trip.
Two charters were cancelled on Saturday due to high winds and seas. This weather pattern appears to be with us until Wednesday: snow is in the forecast. The April 1, fishing derby opener—recreational cod fishing limits increase to 10 per man on the vessel- may have to be put off until Wednesday. April Fools!
