Starvation Ice?

Planning a fishing trip for a few days next weekend, would like to take the boat out to a little more open water, just about got trapped on deer creek yesterday by the ice, don’t want to do that again! I was wondering if anyone knows what the ice on Starvation looks like, and if you think it might be doable in a boat next weekend.

I am not 100% positive, but I think the U.S. Forest Service office in Vernal has very current Starvation updates, or if not, they may provide you with some local numbers that do. Doesn’t hurt to try, here is their contact number: Ashley National Forest Vernal, UT 435-789-1181

I drove past it today. At the bridge, and from where I could see, there was a mixture of open water and ice. Open water was on many edges, going out 25 - 75 yards in some locations. The main body of water is covered with thin ice. I have never fished this lake and so I am unaware of where the boat ramp is located. I am unsure if there is a free path from the ramp to the open water.

Bottle Hollow and Brough are ice free. I have not yet seen the other nearby lakes this year.

I just checked on the ice conditions at Starvation (Tuesday April 9). The main body of the lake still has large sheets of ice but is breaking up. Indian Bay and Rabbit Gulch are ice-free. Ice is currently blocking access to the lake using the main boat ramp. If you wanted to get on the lake today you could put in at Indian Bay. Indian Bay has a “primative” boat ramp. It is actually the old Highway 40. I check Starvation at least twice a week. The ice has been going fast and I wouldn’t be suprised if the lake is open by the weekend. I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks I am heading up Sat to look at some land. I was thinking about taking the boat and trying ice off fishing.

thanks for the info everyone I think i’ll try it

Checked Starvation yesterday. It is wide open. No Ice. A lot of W and white caps but no ice. Should be nice at least in the mornings this weekend.

A couple of us for UWN are going to give it a go. We will be driving a black nissan truck towing a 16 ft lowe boat if you see us say hi. I am also curious because I have never fished this water on any tips you could share as far as were to troll or what to use. Welcome to PM if you don’t want the world to know. Thanks in advance!
