hey folks
just was lookin for a bit of advice. I want to purchase a spinning reel in in the 30-50 dollar range. i could care less about brand name or any thing like that. I just want a solid spinning reel that will be reliable for a long time and handle the occasional 20+ lb fish.

Shimano Symetre with the rear fighting drag lever. Just set it and forget it. Great reels.
The symetre is a great reel, I’ve got a couple myself, but the run 80 bucks. The shimano Sedona ($50) and sahara ($60) are what I would recommend for your price range, you can’t go wrong with shimano. Another one to look at is the pflueger trion. I helped a buddy pick out a reel a while back and I’ve fished it a couple of times while fishing with him and I was pleasantly surprised how smooth it felt for the $30-40 bucks he paid for it.
avenger is in your range and it is a dang good reel,the symetre is a fine reel but it is above 50,the sahara is closer to your range and it would be a fine one to go with.

James still had some at Hooked a few days ago for under $40 and then with a nice discount on closeout.
Just head to your sporting store and kick some tires and give them a spin and get the one you can live with… thats your reel…

i ended up getting the sahara for $54. I looked at all three..the symetre, sahara and sedona. The symetre was a bit more than i wanted to spend. The only difference between the sahara and the sedona was the gear ratio.
The sedona was $44, but was a 5.0:1…for the extra $10 i got 6.2:1. Hope to break it in after work tonight!
I have been buying the $25 combos at wally world using them for a year and then throwing them away…wanted to get something that would last longer. One big fish and the $25 combo rigs are toast.

Good choice. You won’t be disappointed. I’ve caught several hundred decent to pretty large fish on my Sahara and its still the best reel I’ve ever owned. I’ve caught large catfish, large bass, carp, trout, and reeled up the bottom of several lakes and streams and the drag and the reel still perform flawlessly for me. [;)] Its a good hardy reel that you can really crank on and not worry about the performance… Word is, all the shimano stuff is that way.

Agreed on the Mitchell. My work horse before my Shimano Sahara was a Copperhead 40 by Mitchell. I beat that thing within an inch of its bearings and it still worked flawlessly for me… It finally started to gum up after about the 900th dunking or so… When it froze up on me after four years of hard use on lakes and rivers I went into Sportsmans and thats where I got my introduction to Shimano. I doubt I’ll be fishing anything else. Notice I never said never… [;)]
