Snaggin' on the Gorge article

Check out this article from the Provo Herald. Makes it sound like it is no big deal to snag a couple of lakers a day on the spawning beds. [:/]

What do you think?

Shut down Linwood for the entire month of November!

Ditto. Those folks aren’t out there trying to “fool” a fish into hitting. It’s all about the snagging.

And we’ve all seen the Youtube videos of certain guides involved in it.

Disgusting.

Bigfish22 and myself watched one of these guides - 2 boats full of people- snagging these fish all morning long. They didn’t return any. At all. Not one.
Snagging is not inevitable, and a three foot jigging technique is different than six foot.
Guys like this are cutting off their own nose to spite their face. You would think someone whose livelihood depends on the survival of these fish would be more conservative with them.
What a shame.

Now correct me if I am wrong but isn’t the practice of snagging lake trout illegal? If so why didn’t you guys call the poaching hotline? When we were fishing for lakers a month or 2 ago the DWR was all over the place, on the road, at the marina and even in the bushes, checking fish. One boat we saw would proudly hold their catch as high as they could each time they got one and sure enough the DWR was waiting for them on their arrival back to the harbor. I have also heard that if the fish has any holes from snagging it is a good idea to release them, because the DWR will think that YOU were the one that snagged it.

Don you write up the petition and I will push it! thats the only Damn way this will ever stop just shut the bay down! It wouldnt be hard for them to do just have to provide some support! Iam tired of catching fish with scares and open wounds! it makes me sick and its not just THE GUIDES! this pic shows a big scare this is just one of many pics I have of big scares and gashed wound’s! how many of these fish dont heal?

Snagging / snaggers in the bay during Nov has been a problem for as long as I can remember. I’ve been told that many have called the poaching hotline repeatively only to find no one shows up to deal with the situation.. Seems to me the bay should be topping the list as far as where gets the most attention by the DWR during the month of Nov. Also tends to cause one to wonder who in whos back pocket during Nov…
Whats perhaps worse are the morons that promote such low handed tactics by write and/or publish such articles simply for sake of green backs. Namely the Herald in this case..

For the newcomers:

  1. DWR doesn’t care. (FACT, not opinion)

  2. Wardens Lytle and Wolford have never once responded to any of my 40+ phone calls to report snagging, over-limit of fish, or fishing during closed hours. I’ve stayed and watched and waited. Repeatedly. For over 15 years. The previous klan didn’t show up either.

The tide is getting right again now, so I have to get back to tarpon fishing. Can give the detailed facts next week via PM.

I guess the DWR cares more for the Bear Lake macs than the Gorge macs. I don’t 'feel like they shoud outright close the fishing during the November spawn but “snagging and then keeping the fish” rules should be enforced.

Sadly they ruin it for the rest of us when they sang it. As my twin said earlier now you run the risk of being called “the snagger” and have to release the fish, even if you caught it by the mouth.

Holy crap I can’t believe my eyes, you’re actually for the protection of a fish species! I knew you were a trout hugger! Now if you would just learn to hug some bass, and not between your cheek and gum!
I can’t believe the state is letting this stuff happen, if you were out trying to snag a june sucker you’d be in jail in two seconds, it’s insane. And for a guide to be doing this is even worse, what a bunch of talentless assholes.

Cheek and gum, that is a good one!

Cheek and gum, that really is a good one! I hug trout super hard…so that they don’t get away!

Hey don’t get me wrong I would and do take lake trout home that are spawning no matter what the size and sex. I just don’t agree with taking them by illeagle means (ie. explosives, weighted hooks, nets, etc.)

It is guys like this that will ruin it for the rest of us still following the rules. Snagging is not the only option to get Lake Trout over thier nests.

From what I hear the macs do try to remove other fish from their nest by scooping them up with their mouth. Then they release the fishies in deeper water. Now that could be your jig right? Before anyone doubts me this came from a biologist working at Bear Lake.

Wow! That is absolutely amazing!

Aren’t you running into the same kind of thing with the Tarpon down in FL.

Break-away jigs or something like that?

Snagging is a dispicable way to catch fish. I can lift my jig 6’ off the bottom all day and not snag one fish, cause I don’t want to.

Same old Sh#t different year! I to have called on this and the total ignorance of the ones that do it, With the same response as Capt Jim. Start that petition !!! I will push it![;)]

I see this every yr, everyone sits on bft bitchin but never does jack about it? bet most of the guys that piss and moan fish linwood during the spawn even if they arent on the bump. the only way we can do any thing is if people get active about it! put a slot on the fish and shut linwood down to fishing for nov. big deal aint it just takes people and time if you really give 2 chits we would all step up and get pro active and settle this bay delema once and for all! so my son doesnt have to read this bs on bft every yr! every one has a therey that the lake and lake trout are in doome so what can we do? the only thing I can see they do is put a slot in place and shut down the bay? thats the only thing I can see them do?what about all of you?

A slot year round or just the spawn?
Personally, I would be down for both. But would prefer a year round slot.
I just don’t see the point in keeping a monster mac.

We have tried. That’s the point. Dumb and dumber won’t listen. No “biological evidence” and all that other horse hockey. If dwr won’t listen then 1,000,000 signatures doesn’t matter. They have their own agenda, and it’s not preserving the “vicious predators.” They have heard from all us “uneducated public” civilians. It falls on deaf, dumb ears.
