skunked at Ririe

Today I tried a new approach to fishing. I tried to be more easy going and take it easy. I did some errands slept in a little and made it out to the lake around 1. Then we set up the permanent ice house which took a long time. Ended up fishing two hours. Didn’t see a thing. Only saw one other group catch fish. I’m sure it was great in the morning.

I was not confident that the ice would be thick enough at Ririe so we made the trip to Mackay, and had a great time. The kids all had fun, we were in fish from the time we arrive until we left. They were very nice fish for Mackay, I took some photos and will post the later.

I drove up to Ririe tonight to check things out and and saw your icehouse, it looks warm and comfy. I talked to a couple of guys who were just getting off the ice, they said it was very slow (caught 1 trout). The good news, the ice looked to be about 4 inches. Looks like I know where I will be spending my free time for the next month or two.

Were they selling the annual parking permit at the shack?

Don’t worry windriver you didn’t miss much we got up there at day light and only caught one kokanee and one trout, one other group caught a few. We must have left about the time you got there must have just missed you hopefully tomorrow will be better

Like some great fisherman once told me:
“I’m sure you’ll make up for the skunk today by getting twice as many next time.” [:)]

Windriver,
My first time ever ice fishing at ririe and first time ever catching a salmon.
came in fast and furious shortly after setup in the morning…then nothing…until 2pm our neighbors 20 yards away starting catching again…we starting jigging and didn’t get a bite…
3 kokanee I brought home were great eatin during Saint’s game.

I had a hard time setting the hook…seems like they just poke at the bait…

we left at 3…saw the building setting up…you have a chimney coming out…are ya gonna haul a wood burning stove out there???
Looks like a great setup! you are lucky to have a solid structure out there…the wind can get ya pretty cold for sure…
I hope to go back up there soon…

yes there is a woodburning stove. Good to hear you got into them. They are my favorite as far as eating goes. I felt like I had set up over the barren sea as I check tons of holes with the vex and didn’t see a fish. It just wasn’t my day, but I needed to get the house set up anyway.

Your fishing at Ririe was the same as our duck hunting. We didn’t see a single duck until after shooting hours.
