Sorry it’s been so long since my last report, but I think that pictures tell the story when any angler or charter captain makes a report on the net, I don’t like taking my expensive camera on a charter but sometimes I do.
I kept the guys busy with the red drum for a while as you can see here!
The live mullet worked better than the cut mullet,but then again the live menhaden worked good too.
Both were used with good results. A couple of fish were caught on cut mullet.
We boated eight Red Drum anywhere from 27"-30" and got cut off by three others.,the guys had a blast!
Tackle was Pflueger Medalist and Peen reels loaded with Stren 20lb Super Braid, on the new Penn Torque rods.
The fall spawn on the giant red drum has started already! ,I hope you guys can get out and fish for some of the best red drum fishing on the east coast here in Charleston!
Nice catch cappy. A few weeks ago my buddy and I schooled the bull drum on the rocks in murrells inlet. I got two, 29 and 30, my buddy Dennis caught three: 29, 30, and 31. I don’t know how many we lost. The rocks don’t play. We went out of Debordue, right below G’town Sunday and got skunked. Tossing bass assasins and Zara Spooks along the cuts and oyster beds. But, that’s fishing.
Yeah, a lot of anglers that primarily target reds consider the 40 plus’ers to be bulls. I don’t fish for them faithfully, LOL, so 30 plus is a bull for me. [:p]
I use 20 pound braid (power pro), but not all the way to the hook. I tie on a stretch of fluorocarbon with an allbright special. My hook size really depends on the size bait, not the fish i’m targeting. Usually, a 3/0 circle is about right. I’ll up size if I have some larger pinfish or pogeys. I’m honestly not interested in targeting huge reds, in the 40lb plus class. Might as well target tarpon, you’ll get a long fight and a picture…IF you land it. [;)]
Most of my fishing this season has been offshore. I run out of Murrells Inlet, and usually to the 100’ mark or deeper. The offshore fishing really dropped off the beacon when the heat turned on, but with the water cooling down, I expect to see a surge in fishing. The down side is that new reg they put into motion for grouper. That really sucks.
I really want to get into the trout. Those are fun to catch and decent eating if cooked fresh. The only down side is they don’t freeze very well.
With this cool down, the grouper and snapper will be moving in closer, i’m all over that. Spending half the fuel and catching the same fish. I think we can work something out though, i’m always game to meet fellow anglers and wet a hook.
Unfortunately not. All my fishing is done on the weekend, primarily on saturdays. I have a monday thru friday job to thank for that, but it pays the bills.
I’ve never used those gulp shrimp before. I’ll take a small container out with me next time I go. We just did an offshore run this past weekend. We got attached by reef donkeys everywhere we dropped, but managed a nice red grouper and some bottom scraps like seabass and grunts. Only one snapper, I was really surprised.
