Snow and slush that hampered access to much of Scofield last week has now frozen solid. Fished out toward the island, and caught fish continually for over 5 hours. Lots of cutts and rainbows; only 1 chub.
Fish ranged from 12 to 15 inches for the most part.
Great time and place to take kids to really get them into a lot of fish, and a great time!
Any snow machines out there ??
Sweet! headed there in the AM !!
I was out yesterday and there were snowmobiles and fourwheelers all over, only an inch of snow on top of a solid frozen slush layer and ice, perfect for traveling on the ice. Temp was -5.
Thanks
How thick was the clear good ice below the frozen layer of slush? Heading up there tomorrow, never ice fished it and was thinking of taking the wheeler, but the unkown always makes me nervous on the first trip on a new water. Thanks in advance
Me and a couple friends will be heading up in the morning. Looking at the dam arm the island or up on the north end. if you see a quick fish 6 come on over and say hello.
P.S Where do you get the big fish flags ?
what baits are working ?
I too spent the day up there today. You couldn’t have asked for better ice conditions.
I am glad no one else is catching chubs, because I am making up for everyone. I had to have caught close to 30 of them today.
I still managed just as many trout but I must have had the magic chub wand.
I measured 8" of clear ice yesterday. Had my sled out there. Unfortunately, we caught more chubs then we would have liked. Lot’s of fish in the 12"-15" range.
[fishin] My son, 3 grandkids and I were on the ice yesterday and when we got there it was -19. Kids did a lot of running around to keep warm. They run around anyway.
when we left at 11:00 it was 9 degrees. But the sun was out and no wind. I thought it felt good. Very solid thick ice. You could drive a truck on it. Caught a lot of dinks cuts and a nice rainbow. No chubs. If you watched your line there was almost always a taker. They were so small we missed most of the hits. Grandskids had a good time and that’s what we went for. But for fun for me I’d rather catch a few bigger ones than a lot of dinks. I’ll go somewhere else next time. Just good to be out on the ice. NO SLUSH MONSTER.
We had wax worms and meal worms, and the waxies were more effective. We fished ourselves right out of bait!
We were tipping small jigs, like Rat Finkees and Genz Worms.
Sweeet…goin up friday!!
we were there also on the north end near jap point. Four of us, caught 116 between us. 37, 34, 29, 16. It was a good day and lots of fish. caught a few on a gizzie bug but most were on 2 1/2 inch tubs, white and rainbow. tipped with chub. Only one chub today. As we fished two snow mch. came up over the hill and one latterly blew up. I heard a pop and saw a ball of flame, with the rider running up the hill as fast as the snow would let him. When he got about 30 ft. away it really blew, and flame all over. It burne to the frame and not much left. Was by far the hottest snowmobil on the mt. that day. Oh most of our fish were in the minnie slot. One 3# tiger about 21 inches. a few cuts near one #.. Good day and our not so hot old snowmobil got us in and out just fine.
good to hear was there alot of snow?or slush? I’m hoping my ole sled will be able to get me around for the tourney
We were there before the last storm, and I’ll bet there is a lot of new snow on the pond. There was no slash and a lot of frozen snow and ice. Good to go on a snow Mch. When you do get there, fish with small jugs and tip it with chub or minnow. We talked with some people who used gizzie bugs and worm, caught 2 fish. Minnow is the key to a lot of fish. Also get away from the people who make noise. Fish where there haven’t been a lot of pressure and the bigger fish are still there.
We fished Schofield today (Thurs). Road to the west side plowed to the snowmobile parking at the entrance to the cabins. Could not drive on to the traler town of West Schofield this morning. Ended up back on the east side. Parking is not plowed. Wallowed through the snow to the lake. 8 inches of slush getting on the ice (about the first 10 feet), but not bad once on the ice. There were very few fishermen on the ice - most of us in tents. It was pretty cold. We caught small cutts and one chub until just after noon and then packed it up.
What point is Jap point? Thanks
Jap point is on the north end of the res. the second point after you pass the boy scout camp. it is just before spur line bay, the last bay before you hit fish creek. Just watch for the burned out snowmobile.
I have not been up there yet this season, but I know from years of Scofield ice fishing experience that the standard mealies and waxies, sometimes along with a salmon egg always produce ifthe fish will bite anything at all. However, we have lost a lot of the bigger bows and now there are a lot of dinks. The average fish size has gone way down. Fortunately, we now have some big healthy tiger trout. I suggest mixing it up and using a tube jig with half a minnow. Jig aggressively, closer to the rocks in shallower water - that’s where those tigers like to hang.
