I was curious today about Sand Hollow, so I called the St. George Sportsmans and the park entrance office at Sand Hollow today.
The guy at Sportsmans said the Sand Hollow water temp is 58 degrees. He said that the bass are on beds now, and that they expect them to stay on beds for another two weeks. He said that the bigger fish get on beds first. He also said it is getting a lot of pressure with tournaments every weekend, and he recommended fishing it on a weekday. duh. : )
The lady at the Sand Hollow park office said the water temp is 57 degrees.
Can anyone validate those temps, or tell us anything about the fish being on beds?
The water temp might be 57, that is a big might be though. This week and the weekend are not going to bring that temp up any, supposed to be colder than it has for 3 or 4 more days. I was there one week ago and found a temp of 52, and that was after several days of 70 plus degree temps.
As for the beds, i can 100 % tell you the fish are not even thinking about bedding yet. Generally in my experience you start finding bigger fish in the shallows and get a very aggressive bite for a week or more before they start the spawning process. Whoever told you they are on beds either hasn’t been to the lake at all or knows nothing of how bass spawn. This late winter and early spring has been cold and stormy, and even on an unseasonably warm year the earliest i’ve ever seen largemouth on beds at sand hollow was mid to late april.
Last thursday every bite i got was 20 feet and deeper and they’re still on a slower jig bite. I fished and searched the shallow brush and warmer shorelines and didn’t catch or spook any fish out of hiding. When they are bedding, you will find them there, they weren’t there.
My two cents, i spent alot of years chasing largemouth but hopefully someone with more experience than i have can chip in here. I don’t think you’ll see fish on actual beds and spawning for at least three weeks, and that’s if the weather stabilizes and stays nice…
Just got back from sand hollow. Fishing has picked up a bit, water temp is about 55 degrees according to the fish finder. Got three 2-3 pound large mouth. About 20 feet deep, they are not on there beds yet.
went out again today water temp was 54. Got 1 LM didn’t fish long today weather was nice. About 1 pm all the speed boats/ jet skies showed up so i bailed. Hitting up quail tomorrow hope its good we shall see. We were in a 14 foot bass tracker with a min kota V2 trolling motor. Maybe littleutahbill we seen each other[fishin].
I fished from shore for 2 1/2 hours on Thursday afternoon. SLOW!!! I got one small bass that that was the only bite! I am batting a 1000 but not in a good way ha ha I would say a few weeks.
the resent bad weather has yet again delayed the bass finding shallow water. The wind has been kicking up here in St. George which means watch out on Sand Hollow. Fish that were shallow 2 weeks ago have returned to the deeper water. The winds are suppose to be howling again tomorrow. We need a good week of steady warm weather and things will be fun. I am not saying the reports that you have heard are wrong but the weather around here hasn’t been steady and that affects the fishing.
I’m typing this by the fire at Sandhollow. Slow again today We only caught one in about 2 hours of fishing. Our time was better spent at the car show in Hurricane.
Tommorrow’s a new day and it’s great to be on the water.
Another live report from Sand Hollow. I’m sitting in the trailer listening to the wind blow. We got out this morning and caught one 2lb bass before the wind blew us off the lake. Hopefully we can get out again this evening.
I fished Sand Hollow Tuesday through Saturday morning.
They are not on their beds. They seem to be a bit scattered…I caught them anywhere from 4 feet to 30. Water temps ranged from 50 early in the early morning to 56 in the shallow areas in the afternoon. I spent some time on Quail Creek on Wednesday and the water temp was around 53. Only spent about 2 hours there before the wind blew me off. I didn’t catch a thing at Quail, but I did see a few trout caught from the shore. It’s almost full. Lots of flooded vegetation.
Back to Sand Hollow. I caught about 10 on Thursday on plastics. Mainly dead sticking pumpkin colors. I caught around 15 on Friday doing the same thing, and then a very kind guy who wanted a picture of his 5+ lbs bass pulled up and gave me a tip. (thank you again) I then proceeded to catch another 15 or so until it got dark. I attached a picture of the biggest fish of the trip. Caught a few on Saturday morning, and then got tired of all the ATV’s and headed to Gunlock. I only spent an hour or 2 fishing, didn’t catch anything, but that was OK. It was quiet and relaxing. The structure there is amazing though. It’s about 20 feet down from full pool, and the water temps were between 52-55. Once the runoff starts it will probably cool off for awhile. I’m hoping in the next few years it will be a great fishing spot.
