Salem Pond Report (late) 3-25-06

Took my wife and 20 month old son out to Salem Pond
on Saturday. This was my first trip of the season. We took it easy, had a nice picnic, watched the ducks and fish, and after quite awhile I managed to bring in a small largemouth bass off of a 1/16 oz. black curly tail jig. There were dozens of bluegill and small largemouth bass all over the place, visible from the bank. There were also thousands of tiny bluegill fry (1-2 inches long) swimming around. I was at the south end. They really didn’t seem to be hungry, and wouldn’t take a worm under a bobber. They would just turn and follow it and watch it and nose up to it, but wouldn’t hit it. When I started burning the little curly tail jig fast through them, that’s when they finally got a little excited. It seemed to be just a reaction bite and not a hungry bite. The water is still very cold. In a few weeks it should improve a lot. Saw one other guy bring in a small largemouth as well. Didn’t see any trout caught.

All in all it was great weather and a fun time with the family, but not a lot of catching went on.

:sunglasses:Are you gonna have Jacob using a fly rod or baitcaster by the end of this summer?

It’ll have to be a fly rod. I’ve never used a baitcaster. Maybe when he gets older, he can get one and then teach ME how to use it!
