Rod building

I posted this on the rodbuilding board but didn’t get any advice. So I thought I would post it here. (Even though I know it’s not the right place, more traffic here.)

I just bought the goods to build a ice rod. This is kind of a experiment/ see how I like it. I’ve done some research and have a few questions.

Can you use fly thread for the guides, like rayon?

Is rod finish just the the “glue” that goes over the guide threads, or do you need to coat the whole shaft in a finish?

Does it matter how fast you spin the rod as the guide coat finishes?

I’m doing this project really cheap, more for fun.

Thanks for any and all replies.

pm me or give me a call and i can help you

I used to teach a rod building class and give any help you may need. Just pm me if you need anything. Just beware, rod building is very addictive!!! Once you build 1 you’ll be wanting to do another. Have fun.

the thread I use is size A nylon thread, after the guide is wrapped on you will
need to put color preserver then the epoxy finish. you only need to coat the wrapped thread on the guide. you don’t want it to spin too fast, the epoxy coat is self leveling and should spin on a low speed. if you don’t use the color preserver the epoxy will turn you thread color real dark looking. the epoxy finish takes about 10 hours to dry.
later chuck

if you ould like to you can come over and i can show how
i make ice rods all the time and i will be making several today.

when you do your first one it will take some time but its worth it.

what kinda grip and reel seat?

I didn’t realize those tutorials would be considered “competing forums”.

I’ll quit trying to be helpful.

To the original poster, if you would like some help, send me a PM.

Thanks for all the replies and offers, I dont know when i’ll have the time to get some hands on lessons. I just bought the cheapest stuff I could. My handle is korkalon with the plastic rings to hold the reel.

You have to use rod building thread, there is a difference.
utwalleye, you say color preserver on “nylon”? I know silk you have to or it goes translucent, but I have never used it on my nylon. I guess it does go a little darker though. Some nylon thread has the color preserver built in.
I always wrap a broke piece and coat to see what it will look like.
Thanks for the info, I never thought about that.

No, make sure you build your rod on structure. Have wrapped many rods for saltwater and have never had one break yet.
