Anyone have any reports of ice on rockport?
No ice yet. Consider yourself lucky – there isn’t a more worthless lake to drop a line into than Rockport.
I can’t wait tell its iced!
I pulled up to the dam about 3pm to check for ice on my way to echo today. It looks like it is covered completely, but newly formed ice by the dam. 1/3 closest to the dam has no snow on the ice, the back 2/3 is covered with snow-topped ice. I didn’t check thickness, but could see a handful of softball sized rocks tossed onto the clear ice. I wasn’t sure it was ice or water from the road until I saw the rocks on top of the ice.
Thanks for the update, I was hoping it would freeze soon. Now we just need some brave soul to walk out and check it out, maybe even a report[;)].
That was me that threw a few rocks in at the dam and a pull out opposite the boat ramp. 1/2 inch of clear ice and the water looks pretty crystal clear. Looks about 2 inches thick opposite boat ramp. Someone ventured out about 15 feet off the bank to drill a test hole. I am guessing that 2 from the refroze test hole I could see from the bank. 6 feet of grayish ice on the bank, then looks pretty clear/black with a skiff of snow on it. A few brave souls were out on the SW end.
I agree with TroutBumDave on the fishing at rockport. I try to avoid it. I have much more success at other spots.
I have crappy success wherever I ice fish, but I can still luck into a few at any other pond. Rockport will forever be a skunk to me – I’m something like 0-10 overall with that place. I’m done.
Man I hate rocks on the ice. They have a tendency to melt in, get covered by snow, and then destroy auger blades. And they aren’t the best way to check the thickness of ice. One, big enough to break through will let you see how thick the ice is.
definalty one of my favorite places, every year the trout are off the hook and if you find some perch your in for a hayday on em.[;)]
