Left SLC this morn right when rain began. Made it to Rockport in white-out okay, but should have stayed home. Parked at 1st turnout & proceeded down to lake, loaded w/sled, gas auger, & kitchen sink. Tough sledding, literally, plowing new trail thru knee-deep snow. Finally got on, only to find 3" of water atop ice. Reminded me of Strawberry, circa March. Talked to some guys fishing at 43’. Would have stayed, but I had dog along & she didn’t look to comfy standing in ice water. Didn’t even bore a hole, just headed back to truck. Access “trail” too narrow for sled, which kept falling off to side, plus I could walk only about 25 steps thru that knee-deep stuff before needing an 02 break. Thought for sure I’d run into Donner Party. Ended up making two trips, one with auger, one with sled. Gonna have to freeze up a bunch before I hit Slushport again this week. PS — Drive home took nearly two hrs.
Sorry to hear about your rough luck, There was plenty of good hard ice with just a few inches of snow on top Friday, but I’m sure the snow has increased in depth since then. There are some good perch there this year if you can find them. I kept 6 that went from 10 to 11 1/2 inches Friday but it was slow for me except for the trout.
Thats a bummer that you had to smoke a lung on the trip out and did not wet a line. [unsure]
I guess the only good thing to all the snow and Water is that it might bring these lakes up a little for teh year. Lets hope[angelic]
With all the snow on the ice it will make all the lakes have slush on the ice, the snow pushes the ice down so the water flows over the ice the Berry does this every year…
We fished the Rock yesterday also. We went to the third pull out and headed down the hill. The walk down was not too bad. The snow was packed and someone had taken a wheeler down the trail and onto the ice. The ice was 7 inches thick and we did not have the slush on the ice. There was about 5 inches of snow on top of the ice.
Between four of us we caught 7 trout and one big perch. We had constant strikes from 8 AM till 11 AM. By that time the strikes stopped and the snow really picked up. We left at that point.
Sounds like the slush monster is stiill locked up eh ?? Thats great.. I’m headed up there in the morning and was wondering about the monster.. Thanks for your report..
