BOXBOROUGH, MA—A South Carolina man paid more than $100,000 for a rare fishing lure during a recent auction, setting a world record for the highest price paid for a fishing collectible.

Tracey Shirey’s $92,000 bid beat out seven others to take a 10-inch copper Haskell Minnow during a recent Boxborough Holiday Inn auction. With a 10 percent buyer’s premium added, Shirey paid approximately $101,200 for the lure, which was made by Riley Haskell of Painesville, Ohio, during the 1850s.
