RAC meeting in SLC for 2014 Fishing Regs

I wondered… Just didn’t recognize him in person.

What you say, or they say has been tried in the past and does not work..We have a lot of fisherman who fish for bass, hook mortality takes out a lot of fish over the year and we do have some harvest of bass..

For the most part the DWR thinks that a lake or stream is fishing good if you take all day to catch your limit and only half of the fisherman may do that..
I for one think thats not that good, I go fishing to catch fish not look at the birds or other things.. Yes they are nice and help to fill the day but I like catching..
On some lakes I keep fish even bass if they look like they won’t make it.. Little bass just don’t have the meat to make it worth the time or mess to clean or take home..

That’s why we need to convince bass rod to keep his limit

Do you keep your limit?

Keeping 6 10" is a good meal for you and bass meat is one of the best in Utah. I really appreciate for all the laugh and giggles from last night.
Lets comparing other states .

Yes I do and they become fish tacos [;)]

I was there yesterday as well. I thought it was a good meeting and think that the changes proposed this year are good ones. I commend the DWR for this. I was a bit surprised that the second day possession limit issue generated the most discussion. If the definitions for what constitutes a processed fish are included, I don’t see a problem with it. I thought the spearfishing compromise was excellent for both bassers and spearfishing enthusiasts. It was also good to see so many of you there.

RPF; The question you posed last night about all the testing done by the Dept of Health is answered here in this link below. Included is the results of all the current tests done on fish by them, even the normal results. You can peruse the list and decide where you are most comfortable eating fish.

One last thing, I do have to agree with FFL that there was one comedic property to last nights meeting. It was when Bassrods was vociferously giving Drew Cushing an earful in the hallway while the meeting was ongoing. (maybe it wasn’t funny to Mr. Cushing) I could hear Cliff from outside about as well as the speakers at the podium. It’s all good.

I don’t keep a limit but do keep a few here and there. But then again I don’t eat fish tacos.[:P]

Ya most of the time I keep 10-13". They do provide a good fish taco [angelic]. People crying that no one is harvesting so you can count on me lol.

My face light up when I heard crossbow, what an excellent idea!

Hurray someone agree with me. You should of seen my priceless face from bassrods speech. It truly felt weird being the youngest person in the room .

As well I was really confused what RPF was trying to point out last night. I felt like I was outside trying to hear what he had to say [pirate].

But the meeting was worth going to especially meeting up with flygoddes and a few other members. [;)]

More then one.. But it is still hunting not fishing..

More then one.. But it is still hunting not fishing..

Yes it is. I would like to see it have a separate tag/license from the general license. They say they are the same as a traditional angler but you don’t see people going out and trying to hunt deer with a fishin pole.

You need to learn what you are talking about first..

Other states have learned that in highly fished lakes they need a slot limit, some of the most well know waters of the country have slot limits..
Why do we in Utah need them??

First off we don’t plant bass and other warm water fish..
(All of the states I talked about do)
With a slot limit you do NOT have all the little fish we do now..
All bass or fish do not grow at the same rate, Trout like the Cuts in the Berry keep on eating bugs and so they stay shorter and skinner bass can do the same but not as many..The slot will weed these fish out..
And if other states that have much better bass fishing then we do and they have slot limits.. What are we missing??Are they right or are we??

What is the deference in bow fishing or spear gun fishing other then swimming??

The bow is called hunting..

More then one.. But it is still hunting not fishing..

I feel spear fishing is hunting, just different prey. You can pick/target the fish you want. Granted, you can target a fish in clear Water with fishing gear but it ends up more an entice. It can still refuse. Spear fishing, only if you miss.

I wouldn’t be afraid to try it [:P]

Think of this other waters got slot limits because the fish got tons of option for food in Utah there more competition with what harsh weather we have all year that off sets the bass. Basically where bass are there carps in Utah eating the bass food source to grow. You might want to propose a catch and kill for carp then maybe just maybe do the bass slot limit.

Good luck on your quest for the slot limit because the people on deck looked like they were chuckling.

If you don’t like the bass fishing in Utah and complaining so much about it especially that jordanelle 12" rule is showing a nice big FAIL.
You might just want to move to Texas just for better bass fishing so your satisfied .

You know slot limits work. It would be interesting to see if the DWR would take one body of water and put a bass slot limit on it for a few years as a test to see if it would work here or not. I know what the biologist said last night, but what if???

I would not be surprised if we see a slot limit for bass placed on a place like Jordanelle in the future. Some biologists are not averse to it and as they said last night, they are looking at Jordanelle closely. However, as they also explained last night, it will not work well in getting good growth unless folks harvest more of the uberabundant small bass. And certain folks don’t seem to like that idea.

As far as it being an “experiment”, IMO, the biologists already have a good handle on what will happen. We have the “old” Jordanelle as an example of lower population densities of bass (for a variety of reasons), a slot limit and outstanding bass size and growth. We also have the “old” Deer creek as another example. 14 years of a slot limit/trophy regs but with a huge population of small smallies. Very few trophy smallies were grown there and they removed the trophy regs. (It did work a bit for the LMB there, but again lower population densities.)

One last point of clarification. The crossbows on carp was only suggested to the RAC by a member of the public. No action on crossbows was passed.
