I thought that these recent pounding storms (and insane flooding) would have blown out the fishing for a couple of days at Sand Hollow (it destroyed what little fishing was left at Gunlock); boy, I love being wrong. Did a quick check of Sand Hollow after work yesterday and in 90 minutes of walking the shore I took two dozen on topwater and another dozen with small crayfish plastics.
Normally this wouldn’t be worth posting, but I had several fish over three pounds and one that was 3 lbs 14oz. If you know me (King of the stunted SH bass) or SH, that’s a pretty good haul for a guy walking the shoreline.
Almost all of them were spitting up small to medium sized crawdads, or had them bulging out of their bellies. The craw’s were all a dark olive/green, with the smaller crayfish starting to turn orange at the tips of their claws and spotty along their tails. I guess all that churning and rain really got the 'dad’s moving around which brought the bigger fish in to dine.
Recently, the bigger fish have been chilling in 35-45 feet of water and since I’m way too lazy to get the boat out, I have missed most of them this year. However, it appears that times are a’changing and it might be that time of year to get down here and crush a few in the shallows.
So the questions are: when are YOU coming down to visit and when are we going fishing? If you’re reading this then you’re invited. Except FFL. No cheaters allowed.
looks like a good time to me. My brother and I have a fishing trip coming up in October. Either Sand Hollow or Yuba, leaning towards Hollow since we’ve never been before. Hope its a good time for them. There’s something about those bass that we can’t resist.
So here’s the deal Dave. My bride and I will be at SH, Site #WS15 for a week starting 11 October, 2015. We are coming down for the Huntsman World Senior Games and will be doing that on Monday & Tuesday. The rest of the week we are free to do some fishing and I’ll have my Tracker Targa DeepV16 with us for that. I have never fished that pond and would greatly appreciate having someone show me around that facility. If it will work for you, I’d be happy to make your acquaintance.

Those are from a trip last week when I wasn’t too lazy for the boat. All the fish caught were in 45-35 feet. I just threw them in this post because I had mentioned the deeper fish earlier and thought I’d show a little proof/pr0n.
You did real good it looks like. We went out last weekend and caught several of the stunted size you were talking about but nothing over 3 lbs and about 10 crappie. Quail will be hazardous with all the logs and junk that washed in on monday and tuesday so i bet sand hollow will be super busy for a week or two.
That sounds awesome. Wish I could take you up on the offer, but I just got a promotion that’s going to make getting out to local places hard enough. Someday I really, really want to fish Sand Hollow though.
From what I’ve seen, hardly anyone is fishing Quail these days anyway. I, for one, loathe that place, and have caught only a handful of small bass, including a smallmouth that I didn’t know we’re in there.
I have to make a business trip down there the first part of October… I was thinking I’d bring the bass gear and motorized tube for an evening of fishing after my meetings.
Do it man, you’ll be happy you did. If time is short, I wouldn’t even worry about getting the tube out. 95% of my days on the water are walking the shoreline and I do just as well as when I’m in my boat. I get slightly bigger fish in the boat, but less quantity – that being said, I’ve caught plenty of big fish from the shore also.
