Trying not to take apart my reels as it’s time consuming. Since all my equipment is new (within 2yr) i just have to maintain my lubing. During the “stay-at-home” Pandemic orders i re-spooled & re-greased all my reels. Now if you bought any reels “used” expect to put in more maintenance time into your gear.
In this video i’m lubing my Okuma Tesoro12 Star-Drag Conventional Reel. It casts easy & is close to my Torium (though it can cast farther & easier then my Toriums). I’ve let some of my friends try casting this reel like Dusten & Joshua. They were amazed at how easily it cast, the distance they got & how light it was.
Just remember to occasionally lube your reels when you have the time. It’ll lessen those time consuming & costly full maintenance drop-offs.
Do you know the amps your plug is rated for? Are you using lithium or lead acid batteries?
If you’re using lithium and your plug is rated for less than 70 amps it might be cutting off when the power on the motor gets above 7-8 for too long. I had a similar problem with my Ulterra. The plug was a 40 amp plug and it kept cutting out and I would have to restart. I did a little research and switched a 70 amp plug and have not had a problem since.
Here is what I am using
Marinco 12VCPS3 70A Trolling Motor Plug & Receptacle
Sorry for some reason I can’t figure out how to add the link to Amazon, but if you search the above in Amazon it should come up.
I had the same issue. It ended up that one of the batteries was bad. Once I replaced the bad one, everything worked. Hope you get it figured out. Good luck!
I would be very suspicious of the batteries if they are 4 years old. My Terrova did the same thing in October and one of the batteries was totally shorted out. I’d start there. My experience with lead acid deep cycle batteries is that 4 years is getting to the end of their life. AGM maybe a little longer but start with your batteries. I upgraded to lithium and am very glad I did.
I’m not an expert on batteries, but my experience is you must pull them and test them separately. When they are connected, they are going to balance. The lithiums are getting a little bit more expensive on Amazon. But still the way to go in my opinion.
I went to lithium last year and wow what a difference. So much lighter and hold a charge a lot longer than the deep cycles I had before. You won’t regret it. I’m not sure about mixing and matching different brands of lithium. When one of my deep cycle batteries went bad and caused my Terrova issues, I replaced them both.
Make sure you have done the calibration step on the motor I had an issue with my new boat last year. Worked good on std but went a bit crazy on tracking and I pilot untill it did the calibration set up.
Also my gps puck doesn’t power unless I turn on the accessories switch at dash . That’s was messing things up. Motor is 24 volt, the gps puck is 12 volt so it get power seperate from motor.
***One other note on brushed 24 volt motors it is recommended to NOT run motor above power 8 for extended periods of time when using lithium batteries.
Owners manuals and motor websites mention to not run at max power for extended periods of time, on brushed motors . Newer models are now Brushless motors. .
Others have said no problem I don’t run mine above power 8 to be safe.
I have used my 12 volt 50 lb thrust electric motor many times at full power with lithium no
Problems yet? I think it may be more of an issue with the 24 volts systems since lithiums are putting out closer to 26 volts than 24 like lead acid batteries.
Check the calibration for initial set up. If the motor is new you need to do that once to make all the features work. Google or look in owners Manual. I had the problem with my new Terrova last spring when I bought my new boat. Doing the initial calibration procedure fixed everything.
You have to turn the boat in two complete circles etc.., look it up if you have not done it that could be the problem,
Also if you were only trolling 1.5 or so you probably were not higher than power 5 maybe 6 on my 18 foot Crestliner I can troll for kokes on power 5 if not windy.
