I am rather new to BFT and I was wondering if I could ask for some advice from you veteran anglers? I’m fishing the Provo River tomorrow for the first time. I usually fish for bass and cats, but I want to attempt trout fishing seriously, and I hear the Provo is among the best waters in the state.
I will be spin casting and we plan on hitting the lower. I did a little research, but the only access points and tips I could find were the ones listed on the dwr, or about fly fishing.
Any tips on where to go or what to use would be greatly appreciated. And I’m not trying to steal anybody’s spots or secrets. I’m just seeking a jumping off point to start a new spot off right!
I usually park at the first spot past the tunnel in the canyon.Try marabou jigs or nymphing. Also from deer creek to legacy bridge in midway you can use bait.
So my brother and I went to The Provo this past weekend and despite some wonderful tips we got skunked. We were at the Vivian Park area using small spinning gear to no avail. It was really bright and clear, beautiful weather really. There were a few fly fisherman around who also seemed to have been unlucky as well. We are not deterred however. We will be back to The Provo as soon as we can to try again! Thanks for the tips everybody, and hopefully next time will be much better for us!

Sometimes it seems like the fish in the Lower Provo are just not very hungry. I want to try something silver and flashy next time since gold hasn’t been showing me the love lately. Gold is a killer around the time the brown trout spawn though.
Next time I find myself headed that way, maybe we could meet up?
Sorry you got skunked. The Provo can be a cruel mistress. I think I spent around 40 hours on it before I caught a single fish. I’ve pretty much got it down now I think. I got about a dozen last Sunday. I’ve never tried it with spin gear though, only fly fishing.
