I got my new kayak a couple months ahead of schedule so decided to take it for it’s maiden voyage to the Berry.
I ended up at Renegade but only caught four. I did see some people catching fish really close to shore, but they were mainly using bobbers, which is not how I wanted to fish. I mainly used jigs tipped with various baits. I did catch two though while trolling. I never really troll at the Berry but since I could easily troll while I was paddling to my next spot, I figured I might as well. Man the kayak is easy to paddle even though it weighs in at ~130 lbs.
I tend to bring quite a bit of tackle while fishing and it hasn’t been easy with my other kayak to access or find my gear. But with the Pro Angler, there is plenty of room for all of my tackle and it is easy to access. Plus it has six horizontal, two vertical and one adjustable rod holder.
I didn’t take any pictures of the fish, only the yak.
Congrats on being the second PA14 owner in Utah (AFAIK.) I wanted to be there with you, but we had a meet/greet at Mantua.
If your experience is anything like mine, you’ll be bombarded with people asking questions, admiring and just ogling your Prangler. You’d better get used to it. I even had five Chinese guys stroll over as I was loading up after fishing, and they were openly impressed. No “inscrutable” about it!
I told you that pedaling (note: it’s NOT peddling) is effortless. Stroll to troll is exactly what it’s like, no?
If you want, I’ll show my my seat mod and how I installed my FF transducer. Let me know when you’re ready.
Padling ? Is that pedaling or paddling? I assume pedaling.
How are you transporting it with your vehicle? I really like the pedal kayaks but hard to bite the bullet and replace 2 other kayaks and then the issue of transportation comes up. 2 would probable be too heavy for the roof mount and then I’d have to bother with a trailer. Just curious what you’re doing so far.
Were you there Sat or Sun? I was there Saturday (by myself..had a late Friday cancellation) and experienced just about the same conditions at Renegade. Cold, breezy, a little snow on the ground to start with but melted by the time I left at noon. I had to adjust my fishfinder to filter out the crud in the water, and instead of trolling, I jigged the whole morning (didn’t want to mess with all that crud on my trolling lines) and did surprisingly well. I stayed in the same spot all morning.
I had brought trolling stuff to try out in case the jigging didn’t work out, but never even got the trolling stuff wet.
Do you use an anchor with that craft?..fishfinder? etc.?
I was there Sunday. I don’t have a fish finder on it yet. I use around a 2 pound claw anchor and it held me in one spot with no problem.
I fished the typical Renegade spots which I mentioned weren’t fishing well for me anyways. Glad you were able to find them. I should have pm’d you before I left to get the inside scoop.
