Very quick trip up for a concrete and boat repair job two days ago.
I managed to fit in a little boat time to make sure my repairs were good!
Nice job Shane, so I thought you were retired… Was this concrete job just a help somebody out deal, or am I confused on your retirement? Looks like you had some fun, I’d love to go play with the rock fish for awhile… You must have been fishing shallower than most, it’s cool to see those fish not blown up like a basketball… What kind of fish is the one with the yellow fins… Thanks for the report… Later J
Hi Jeff,
I did retire from the government almost seven years ago.
I was 51 and I had my full >30 service years in so I pulled the plug a few months before I turned 52.
I was a APWA Certified Inspector for a few local cities and still wanted to keep my brain operational, just not for 40 hrs/week. Haha.
I then got my business license as SDB Services,LLC and also my EIN number.
I set up a S Corp and have a couple contracts with some civil engineering firms to provide construction observation reports on civil construction projects in northern Utah.
A small lodge on POW Island flew me up to help on a little concrete project.
The concrete project was for a day and a half and I also spent a half day working on their boats cleaning up wire issues the salt water had caused.
After that they gave me the keys to the boats and I got some fishing and shrimp potting in.
They were very generous and I am very lucky/thankful!
I caught the Rockies in +/- 100 fow.
By law you have to have a descender on your boat so we had one rigged up on a separate pole and the ones we did not eat we sent back in to the inky depths immediately after taking a pic.
At one point I had 3 or 4 Sea Lions circling the boat right as I caught a Rockie. I was SO hoping they were going to attack my fish on the way up so I could say I fought a Lion for a minute or two but they left my fish alone.
I don’t know the official name of the yellow one. The guy I was with called it a Yellow Fin.
Love POW , I have a friend who lives in Whale Pass. I try to go up and visit every year. I missed last year hoping to make it this fall.
Love the spot prawns! Looks like you had a fun time!
Those Spots are God’s gifts to our taste buds!
Now that looks like fun. To bad you were not able to take on a seal lion. That would have made a good tale to tell
Those all look great Shane, what is that one fish with all the spiked fins, on the upper side?
It looks like a kelp greenling to me. Plus tiger rockfish, yelloweye, and quillback. Spot prawns are awesome, hope to catch my own on a fishing trip in the future.
I was told Yellow Fin.
We caught some ‘Kelpies’ also but they were bland looking so I did not take pics of them.
Thanks for the update Shane, sounds like fun duty for sure… I need to find something like you’re doing so I could retire and still make some extra money to keep me afloat and hopefully have that fun duty come up during it… Fun times… Later Jeff
