Porcupine?

Looking to take a first trip to Porcupine and I’m wondering about the ice thickness and a decent area to try? Any word on the Koke’s being active? Would greatly appreciate any info.

            Thanks!

I’ve been meaning to make it there myself. I’ve heard the ice near the dam is safe. I’d imagine it’s all pretty safe by now. Be careful out there though. My buddy and I almost went through the ice out in the middle last year. As for koke activity I’m not sure, again I haven’t been since august. But I do know they go deeper in the winter.

My Dad and I made it up to Porky today. It was very slow! I only managed 2 bites in a little over 3 hours. I tried all of the spots that usually produce. We only had a couple of schools come through all day in 3 different locations. I also talked to an old Timer out there today. Today was his 7th trip and he has caught 10 kokes total. So it sounds like it has been slow the past couple of weeks. I saw 3 fish total caught today, between 5 people. The ice is pretty good anywhere from 5 to 8 inches. First time for me being skunked up there, but it probly won’t be the last! Good luck.

FYI,

If you do go up there this week, be very careful driving down the hill, going up wasn’t so bad. On the way down past the dam I was in 4H and started to slide. We came within a couple of feet from sliding off!! I nearly had to change my shorts. The road is pure ice from all of the packed snow, so be careful!!

A Friend and i just got off Porcupine today. Ice was good across the damn. Action was slow, only managed to get a couple bite and pulled out a nice cutt at the last mintune. but talking to others the Kokes are active at about 8-12 feet down(which is about where i caught the trout) and the bite is slow though. From what they told us it about a hour or more for fish or a bite. Thats all i really know… Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks Mike for your report, how was the road conditions today. I am going up there Saturday and curious to see if and how much it has changed.

I know im not Mike, but the weather conditions have stayed the same in the valley. It has warmed up a bit today so maybe a storm is moving in. To be honest a little snow pack ight make the road a bit better. It was just so packed down it made the road ice. Some snow might make for some better grip. The road is fine and has been in much worse condition. Just coming off the hill by the dam slow down to a crawl, most people already do im sure. Good luck fishing!!! Hope you catch some, its been slow.

had a skiff of snow yesterday. barely enough to dust the ground. but it’s already gone. supposed to be pretty coudy all weekend.

I was there with a couple friends several weeks ago and there was a good 6 to 7 inches of ice then, fishing was slow for us. It was slippery coming down hill from the dam, just ride the R/H edge. If you go with Smokeonthewater, he knows where I park, getting on and off is usually the only problem if it gets warm. There was only a couple inches of snow on the ice when I was there. Good luck, hope you guys get into them.

Thanks Pete, I will call Tom and see what he is going to do.
