Hit Porky at 3pm to a warm SW wind. Stepped onto the ice and fell through to the top of my boots. Temp dropped pretty fast with blowing snow. Caught 2 kokanee on a kastmaster around 10ft. Fishing was terribly slow. Moved around quite a bit. Talked to two other groups who had been out all day. They only had 5 fish. One guy said he lost a trout. Brown? Getting off was a bit tricky. Fell through to my knees. I left my own brown floatie in the water.
I would caution going out until it gets cold again. Still good ice beneath the thawing top slush. Standing water of about 4 inches. By the way, those 2 kokās were my first. LC
Congrats on your first! Sorry you fell thru with JUST 2!DRAT! Throw that castmaster OUT!!

Congrats! I still need to catch my first Kokeās!!
Iām afraid the ice season is rapidly dwindling.
i have caught kokes in open water but never on the ice but had hoped to this year, but it looks like i will have to wait for next year thanks for the report.
Sorry to hear about your getting wet. Porcupine is bad for that when it starts to warm up. We usually take an atv ramp to throw down to get on the ice. Too bad you didnāt tie up with us the last 3 times up there as we all filled up, but they only averaged 10 1/2 inches. Some of the ones I filleted allready had eggs skiens started, I guess they will be our spawners. We need to catch the heck out of them to knock their numbers down, seems to have helped in the past to add at least a couple of inches or better to their length. Thatās one lake that I donāt mind giving info out on.
Thanks for the info! I caught my first Kokeās there as well. They tasted delicious.![]()
OK, Iāll ask a few questions.
How do you get to Porcupine?
Is there much public access?
Is there a boat launch?
Boat launch- yes- dirt though-- 1 down a gully and another and the far east end. wakeless speeds.
Porcupine- outside of Paradise/Avon Utah (Cache Valley- South end) UT165 till it ends and follow signs
You can access the lake but not 95% of the surrounding landscape- not that you would want to though anyhow.
Thatās great that you got into the kokes, even though only 5. But heck, that is 5 more that before you got there[:p] Just wait till open water, then it gets really crazy. But just like mrcrestliner said, keep all the kokanee you catch out of the pig and lets get the size back up on them little silver bullets.
we was up last week and they were blacking out the screen filled up in 1 hour. was there in snowmobiles on the ice? like to see it freze up again but the temps are staying way to warm at nite. just got off sno tell curent temp at the pig 26 high for today 31 low kast nite 12 might freeze that slush if this keeps up.maybe i will fish in the mornin.
Dirt works for me. I would be using my kayak, not the boat. As long as there is no steep bank to struggle up and down I can usally launch.
What kinds of lures work best in the spring? The usual āKoke Killersā and spinner type things? What bait on the hook?
If I remember right, kokes like it a little fast as ar as the trolling, is that right?
Where I was raised (upstate NY) the only way we used to catch them was to chum with a mix of catfood and oatmeal. Then jig with small castmasters and ice flies. We could get a boatload like that.
It was 8 this morning at my house just a few miles from Porcupine- got to believe it freezes at night and by about noon itās starts to slush up again
It was pretty decent fishing for 2 of us this weekend- maybe 2 hours for 2 limits.
