Hey everyone, i’m new to the Ogden area and this site. I just hit the two spots listed in the subject for the first time on Saturday and wanted to share my logs. Well first a little background from me. I grew up in Pennsylvania fishing my rivers (Allegheny, Clarion) and creeks (too many to remember!) so I’m used to fishing fast water with light tackle. I actually prefer fishing fast water and am not all that good at fishing lakes and ponds. I like fast water because by reading the river you can determine exactly where the fish are. So on Saturday morning at 0730 I hit the Ogden river at its closest point to the pond and worked upstream almost to the Wall Ave bridge. I started off with a small plain Mepps Aglia spinner with no luck. Noticing the current was a little fast for the spinner I switched to a Gold spoon. It wasn’t long before I hooked up with my first Brookie. It was simple, I found some slower water near the far bank and dropped in the spoon which was met with a hard hit and a good little tug. He was only about 9 inches but it was my first Utah fish, my first fish since I left Iraq in February (yes i did some fishing in Iraq) and my first trout since ohhhh about 2005 (I’ve been out of the game for some time). Well I decided to stick with the spoon because I liked what it had to offer and kept moving upstream. I came to a place where a small stream dumped into the river and saw a nice little pool under a small waterfall. I dropped the spoon in there and instantly hooked up with a 12 inch brookie. Good Deal! I moved upstream a little further with no luck and with the sun moving higher decided to find my way back to the truck. Well i didn’t get far before I realized that the 21st St. Pond was on my way and there were definitely fish to be had. I hit a few spots and tried to entice a decent sized carp that was tailing close to the bank. Nothing. then I moved futher along the pond and came to a nice spot with a downed tree in the water. I went back to the old Mepps Aglia and on the second cast I linked up with a 12 inch Rainbow. After that I headed home. I got the bug in me a little later in the day so I went back to the pond to try some twilight fishing. I got out of the truck, hit the bank and on my second cast hooked up with a nice rainbow. I didn’t measure it but it was atleast 16 inches! What a beauty. I even ended up pulling two Largemouths out of the pond (mind you they were both about the same size as the spinner I was using, man bass will hit anything). And then packed it in. That trip was my first in Utah and certainly won’t be my last. I’m back in the game and can’t wait to hit the Weber River soon! If there is anybody out there with some tips or maybe some out-of-the-way spots I’d like to hear them. I love trout fishing but Smallmouth Bass are my drug. I would love to hear any information you may have on where I can find some bronzebacks!

Thanks for the tip. The MEPPS and the spoon I used were both gold. Need to hit the store and pick up some more supplies.

A post is better than none !!! Ogden and the weber rivers hold some toads just have to fish for em next time out try a size 3 0r 5 rapala countdown er husky jerk in rainbow er brown trout patterns.. Also I question the brookies you caught ??? Sure they werent baby brownies ??? Ive fished both rivers for several yrs an have yet to catch a brookie ???
They were surely browns down that far.

Thank you for the post. They must of just resocked the pond. hav nt seen a trout come out of there since spring.
There are sme nice Largemouth in there . got a 5lber earlier this year. on a pop-R in that corner where the tree is down .
I wasn’t too sure what was in the pond until I pulled the rainbow and saw all the largemout fry hitting the top of the water. Had to put on a tube after I realized it held bass. No luck with any big ones though. To those who may doubt my trout species knowledge I can assure you they were brookies.
Welcome to the site Ruppy and thanks for serving our Country. Also thanks for the report and pictures. There are plenty of smallmouth in Pineview but Jordannelle is the place where the largest smallies are caught, up to the 8 lb range. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your time here in Utah.

just curious how was the fishing in iraq?
So not trying to stir the pot as to your knowledge about the trout species. If you say brookie then maybe…just maybe you caught brookies half brother the tiger trout. They have the same white leading edge on the fins that helps distinguish a brookie from the others, they are created by using brookie milt with brown trout eggs and stocked all over utah. I catch numerous small tigers on the Weber down in Riverdale. Greedy lil things.

Thanks for the info on smallies. I’ll be sure to hit up pineview soon. As to the fishing in Iraq it was actually pretty fun. I didn’t get to do too much but the few times I went out were productive. I mainly used spoons and was pulling out fish known as asp. They actually look like a mix between a bass and a walleye but they’re not very good fighters. There were plenty of carp, catfish and some monsters known as mangar. I never hooked into any of those but if you’d like to know more go to www.baghdadflyfishing.com.
I’m new to utah also . So not sure what all maybe in there. Ido know that the state stocks it with trout and that I have caught bass and palm size bluegill out of there. have hear that there is crappie and cats, but not on my rod as of yet.

Nice post - welcome aboard, and well done reading the river. I had that kind of experience up Logan river below first dam early spring. A cement wall that made something of a waterfall rush down the middle, deep pools across the river below a rock wall, and under a tree. Tricky flip - cost me a few lures it did, but I hooked up a nice rainbow, alas couldn’t get him across the fast current to my side.
Do you fly fish too? Jigs and feathery tailed spinners should get some action too. Fly and bobber seems to be reporting well. Don’t know how much you like to travel - but Blacksmith Fork up from Hyrum has some nice fish.
You can find smallmouths at Pineview, Willard, Bear river. There’s some nice largemouth in Hyrum, Newton, Mantua. Utah is big on trout, that’s for sure. Provo river is a popular fishery.

I don’t fly fish as of right now, god know’s i’ve tried through the years but never really got hooked on it. To be honest I have NEVER caught a fish fly fishing. I remember back in PA I was trying to use streamers in the river i grew up on. I had so many fish chase them but could never get a strike, same thing with trout on some of my favorite creeks. I am definitely going to try out fly fishing here in Utah though.
