Well I headed for Pelican this morning but I got side tracked…
Have you ever headed for one lake and when you get to the turn off your vehicle just turns the other way? Well thats what happened this morning.
I launched the boat around 6 AM and motored over to one of the points. Brought up a slimer on the first cast. I’m wondering about omens now. It must have been a good omen cause I only ended up with 5 slimers all around 11 inches long but I hit a bonanza on bass.
This has been the best spring day of bass fishing yet. The biggest smallie at 5 lbs and 17 1/2 inches long. This was a true butterball. Don’t know how many bass I caught cause I didn’t keep track and the dog hasn’t learned to count just yet…but I did manage a few pictures that I’ll send over to TD to post for me.
We are going to brave the boat show tomorrow and try for some of the same. I really enjoyed the blacked out background in your pics, Don’t blame you at all! I think we may be relegated to the no wake zone to avoid getting angry at the boaters. Hopefully we can have a little success after today’s skunk-a-thon at Yuba. We really are pitiful.
The bass was in schools and if you got one you could get alot more in one place I got 16 bass from 10" to the big one…
I meet a guy that was watching me catch some in one spot when we talked he said he wished he could catch a bass well I took him to a spot so he could but when I tried to take his picture with the fish he was afraid his boss mite see…(he was playing hookie)
It was really nice out on the lake today–did get a little windy around noon, but not that bad. Lots of debris in the water and pretty muddy around the bend. Fished for bass all day, got skunked. Just when I think I am figuring out the lake I get humbled. Did catch three rainbows–surprisingly strong–thought they were smallies till I got them boatside–caught one on a deep diving x-rap, one drop shotting a gulp minnow, and one on a tube with a weighted hook–that one was pretty decent, very fat and strong. Lost one of dad’s lucky craft pointers so I had to give him one of mine. Lost two of my drop shot rigs.
I need to take lessons or something.
Once the lake is full, and the water temps come up a bit, the smallies can be caught in pretty skinny water at the far east end of the lake, near the inlet. Trout, perch and smallies are all in there chasing baby perch so any good imitation will catch them. It will also catch some big chubs.
The best fly fishing for smallies up there will start around the end of June into July. You will also be able to find them all along the banks and can whack them with a sink tip or full sink and a variety of large fly patterns. Pale perch is good, but they will take plain white, black, brown, green, purple or just about anything else if you swim it by them right. When things really get good, you can even score on topwater. FUN, FUN.
