The impending storms never seemed to manifest, so figured, might as well head out and chase some kitties. Headed to Cache Junction to explore Cutler, but found the boat launch closed. Rather than book back to Benson, I headed up to Newton. Almost there, and . . . (musky!?)
Four days, another 3 foot drop. Keepin the wheels dry, steep drop, and the boat lifts away. Again - lots of flippin basslings, busy finder from the start. Lots of bank-tanglers along the dam. No other boats - one other arrived with me, but opted to go elsewhere. Later another fishn boat arrived, and did some tooln around. The lake was glass at times, windy and ripply at others. Mostly windy.
Hit the ramp, and got my first fish on - a perch, skunk away! Dabbled with a couple perch and basslings, then headed north to the middle of the lake. The lake is even shorter now. Hoped to hit up some crappie, but alas. Spotted up grundles of fish in the middle water, and loads of fry along every shore. Nabbed nubbins of basslings, found a decent sizer, and more perchies.
I’ll admit - I had a couple slow retrieves on the basslings, but didn’t get jumped by a tiger. Seen a few rise, and gulp. Was standing on the front bench, and one floundered right against the boat. Wow! Makes me wonder about rinsing off fingers, or fish… tasty morsels. Found one dead musky on the shore-side. Kinda chewed.
Towards sunset the shores lit up. Basslings jumping, flipping, flopping - even out of the water - right onto the bank. Silly little fishlets! Perch turned on for a time, at least enough to pick lots of worms free.
Not a big basket this time, but lots of biters and takes to keep my busy, and a fine day out. No thunder bumpers to be chased by. Just not sure why the CJ launch is closed. Water too low? Guess I’ll need to jump in at Benson, or had considered giving Willard another chance. Maybe some night this week.
Any Boils?
