Yesterday was my birthday, so my wife surprised me with a fishing trip
We got a late start, since she was nice enough to let me sleep in. We got to Newton around 10, and the fishing was pretty decent. We went to the west side, and right off the bat the bluegills started biting my son’s line. They were having commitment issues, but we still ended up getting him a few though. I had my 2 pole permit, so I threw a line out there for the perch/bluegill/crappie, but I used that pole as an excuse to try and help my son reel some more in.
My second pole I threw a Zoom on there and was doing pretty well for the bass, then something weird happened. I got a bite, brought it in and it was a perch! The first strange part of that is that I have never caught a perch on a plastic before. The second is that it was my first perch of the year at Newton. I figured it was just a fluke, but 2 casts later, I picked up another one on the same thing. I ended up hooking into 5 of them with that thing (only got 3 in, but the others jumped off a foot from shore and we could see the vertical stripes). Then they just instantly stopped biting and I did see another perch after that.
I threw a chunk of one of those perch on the pole that I had been throwing for bluegill, as my son had lost interest by that point and ended up getting two bites back to back, then instantly nothing. Overall, I ended up catching probably 6 bass, 3 perch and a bluegill. My son caught probably 5 bluegill and a perch. I brought home 1 bass and 1 perch, just for the sake of trying some new flavors. I have decided Coyote must REALLY like perch meat to be willing to filet as many of those as it would take for a meal ![]()
Enjoy the good eats. I sure love them tasty treats! Nice work at the Newt and all this report needs is some pics. Without measurements I am curious on the sizes.
How are you planning on cooking them? Let us know how the taste test goes.
I only took one pic, but here it is. They ain’t much though. Usually when I cook up my fish, I do it Golden Corral style… Cajun seasoning fried in a pan ![]()
Pretty simple I know, but I am simple kind of guy ![]()
Thanks for the pic. Hope the meal goes well. Perch are delish!!!
Thanks ![]()
Hope so too. He was pretty good sized, but the filets are still tiny when you are used to catfish!
One thing about perch, and other panfish - is they get fatter quicker than they get longer. A stack of 8-10 inchers can be some work, but you can get some tasty boneless filets. I’m still looking to meet the over footlong panfish of most any flavor.
So no Crappie for ya up there? Thought they were pretty mixed in with the Gills, or at least passing through.
I’ve still been playing with the bass-n-crappie along the bear. Got a nice 15 inch thunk of a Smallie Friday, and a couple feisty crappie and a few bass yesterday.
A football jig, and a chigger-craw - game on. Curly tails for Crappie, they like my spinners too.
I need to get back up to Newton - so no float this time out?
I was very surprised, when I was out a few days before I caught a bunch of crappie but not this time. Decided not to take the boat this time. It was looking like rain and I did not want to take the boat up after that. Plus the whole family came and they wanted to take the suv
Bamaboy and I have been having perch bite our plastics all summer long, though we’ve been using big plastics so most of the time you can just feel them tapping it. We have brought a few in though. Bama even caught a little baby bass that couldn’t have been longer than 3 inches long, just grabbed on to the tail and wouldn’t let go lol. We even have caught muskies on the plastics this year…Plastics seem to be the thing to use at Newton this year.
I was there yesterday (9/27). My daughter had the whole day off from USU so up I went with the 10’ flat bottom to try for musky. The water was pea soup, no wind but a beautiful day. Had two follows but no hook ups this time. Caught numerous bass and perch. 3 crappie also. Perch were 6-8". Bass the same size with the exception of 2 plump 13". Not alot of water. Deepest part of the lake just 12’ deep.
Yeah, water clarity sucks. Plus there is some junk on the surface that looks like half-dried, light-green paint. That stuff literally reeks. Andiibart and myself have had our fun with the bass out there this year. Heading back tomorrow, I think. Last Saturday, the water was back up about a foot from where it was the week before. But it probably did drop back out again. Could you see the concrete wall over by the southeast corner, where the outlet is? I was above water, but last Saturday was back under.
