Those wipers should be 18 inches or will be soon with all that food they have to eat there. I sure would like to get down there this year and give it a try:sunglasses:. WH2
I went down to Cedar pick up my little brothers ‘eurocar’? Little car has twice as much hp than my truck. Anyway I got there too late to check it out but some of the locals were tight lipped about it Newcastle…makes me wonder.

last year the wipers were only 10" but I still tried to catch some. No luck but very few people are catching them. The problem with the shiners is like going to the fish hatchery and catching one bass in a run with a million 2" minnows for food.
I don’t see the Wipers having an impact for several more years.
If the wipers are eating good, they can grow 8 inches in a year, I figured by this fall 18 inches is a real possibility. Were you trolling or fishing from shore when you were there? WH2
They are already 18 inches. People are getting are picking up a couple wipers here and there, but targeting them specifically is still pretty tough.
I’ve tried trolling and fishing from shore. Still haven’t caught one or even seen anybody else catch one.
PBH any boils happening? That was what I was hoping to hear about. I’ve seen boils every year out there but it was always caught bass or trout.
I don’t know if you have fished Willard for wipers before, so I’ll ask these questions. How fast were you trolling at Newcastle and what kind of lures were you trolling. I’m just interested to know if you were using the same methods that work at Willard. Did you have a fish finder? With Newcastle being a deeper lake, the fish might be hanging deeper and of course the bait fish the wipers feed on there look different, so different lures might be better. I usually troll around three MPH, so I would think that would be the same. Any info would be helpful, thanks WH2

There are so many dang Golden Shiners in that lake, that boils are happening constantly. I just don’t think that it’s the predators causing the boils!
I don’t know how to catch the wipers out there. Like I said, a few people are getting a wiper here and there, but I think they are just lucking into them. Targeting them right now is going to be tough. They could just sit in one place all day long with their mouths open and get more than they need to eat! So, if you can drag a lure into an open mouth, you should be able to catch one!

Try lures that rattle, that seems to help at times. When the shiners are only 2 inches, I’m sure they look a lot like the shad at Willard and you should be able to use two to three inch curly tail jigs or Maniac minnows in white or chartreuse, try casting to any surface activity. You could even troll the jigs, we catch them that way when there are a lot of bait fish in the water. Do the shiners usually ball up in tight schools? Have you marked these schools while trolling? If you see these balls of bait fish on your finder, then the wipers will be close, feeding on them. When the Wipers are deep we have even used down riggers to catch them, using bright red or pink headed jigs heads with white or chartreuse grubs. Wipers go into a frenzy when they start pushing the little shiners toward shore, they will hit anything that is chose to the same size as the bait. Sometimes size doesn’t matter when they see topwater action like watering the dog with a Zera spook. I hope this helps, I would really like to hear a report if you make it over there, good luck. WH2

almost like ‘walking the dog’ but with more water lol. I fished there alot when I was working in Cedar 4 years ago before the wipers were planted. I would see boils all over.

Think of it this way: On a very stormy and cloudy day, look up at the sky. What do you see? Clouds. In fact, pick a day when there is no blue in the sky at all. Look at all those clouds.
That’s what Newcastle is like with Shiners. Just dark clouds of schools of shiners. Marking them while trolling would be a joke. In fact, you’d probably switch around and try to mark some water! The wipers don’t have to follow the bait balls around.
Right now, targeting wipers is going to be extremely difficult. There is so much food in that lake, that competing with that forage for a bite is dang tough. This is exactly why the smallmouth bass fishing is so difficult down there. There are lots and lots of smallies in Newcastle – some dang big pigs as well – but how do you get them to take a curly tail jig, or a rapala, or anything else when there’s such a smorgasboard of shiners swimming around? Like I said before, those fish don’t have to move to feed. They just open their mouths and the food swims right in!
How big are the shiners in there? Sounds like a good place to trap a freeze some bait. 
Looks like you can buy a pionter in golden shiner,alot of you guys swear by these lures,could be the newcastle bait.what do you guys think,I have been wanting to go down and visit my dad in St.Gorge,Maybe I can just have him meet me at newcastle and stay there for three to four days.
the problem with using a golden shiner type lure is competition. You’ll be competing with millions of real golden shiners! Better get something that sticks out in a crowd.
I’m betting the farm that Newcastle will become the new home for the state record wiper in the not-so-distant future.
I think your on to something,The producer may look wierd enough to get them to hit it.But I have always tried to match the hatch,there are millions of shad in willard and they still want to hit something that looks like a shad?I will let you know what I find out,I need a break from all this work,I have only been fishing three times this year and need to get the h311 out of town for a bit.

There is some good dry fly fishing since the trout are starving.
The biggest bow(28") I’ve seen or held came from this lake but that was before the shiners showed up.

Nope. Give it another year (or two) and hopefully those wipers will put a dent in the shiners.
If anything, Newcastle is now on it’s way up!
