Newb here, need help with reel/rod combo.

Hello everyone!

My girlfriends father just took me out fishing a few days ago on his boat out of Keyport, NJ. We caught about 5 fluke but no keepers. My longest was 16.5 inches!! My second fish I ever caught!

So I would like to get into fishing now that he is looking for a slip for his boat! I’d like to pick up some of my own gear so I’m looking for a nice rod/reel combo. I was using a Skakespeare. We just put it out over the boat and pressed a button and the line went all the way to the bottom. I wish I knew what type of reel that was.

Today, I went to the store and bought this pole. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1422792

Now that I look at it online, it’s used for Freshwater. :frowning: Can I still use this pole out on the boat for fluke or bluefish and such?

If not, can someone recommend a good cheap combo please.

Thanks for all your help and helping out the newb!

This is the type of rig that will do you well flukin and chaseing blues. Uglysticks are a good rod for the money as for the reel, shamano,Diawa. I have Penn Reels, but I hear they are owned by a chinese outfit and the quality has gone done now. Put on 20lb mono and you should be good to go for both fish. Don’t forget the steel leader for blues.
