Old news. There has been a thread already. Nice fish nonetheless. Maybe I will get my kids scooby doo pole out and try for a record. There is probably something about a smaller pole that the fish like.
I think it was BLM that made the state record post about a week ago.

That’s ok. You cut out this part:
“Willard Bay is the only body of water in Utah that holds wipers, a sterile hybrid between a female striped bass and a male white bass.”
Willard ain’t the only body of water in Utah with them. Wait 5-6 years, and Willard won’t be the owner of the state record wiper either!!

If they target those shiners like the DWR hopes, I bet those wipers do get big. How deep does that lake get? The depth of willard is really holding back the growth potential of the wipers there.

Yep, I forgot about them putting those wipers in Newcastle Reservoir to try to control those golden shiners.

Newcastle. Here’s a link to the DWR Hotspots Map filtering on fish species ‘Wiper’. You can see two pins in the map. Willard and Newcastle.

Newcastle is about 70 feet deep near the dam. That would be at capacity. On average, I would say about 40 feet.
People really haven’t started targeting the wipers at Newcastle as of yet. They were first planted as fry in 2005 (two years ago), so they haven’t been large enough to actually target. However, fishermen have been catching a few here and there while fishing for trout and bass. This summer we should start seeing some wipers up to about 18".
As long as the DWR can continue to get wipers in Newcastle, this should turn out to be a fantastic wiper fishery.
