MotorGuide XI3 remote (mind of its own)

I went out for my first trip of the year last week. Went solo as it was mid week and Im recently retired. One of my favorite purchases to-date has been my Motorola MotorGuide XI3. This motor allows me to troll using my bow mounted motor from the rear of the boat using a remote fob on a lanyard. Perfect setup especially if you are trolling solo. UNLESS……

Much to my surprise on my first left turn the motor rotates 1.5 ish complete turns. Not optimal especially in busy waters. As the day progressed the left turns continued to be problematic and could have been down right dangerous had the lake been more crowded. I managed to finness my turns with a quick push of the left turn followed immediately by a right. Coupled with the task of watching lines setting hooks, reeling and netting etc, Not a good situation. I wanted to share this in case anyone else has this happen to them. When I bought the motor I was so impressed that I decided to by an extra remote on amazon, in case I ever lost the one that came with it (Important detail later).

When I returned home I tinkered with the setup more. I replaced the battery in the existing remote, without any real results. Searched youtube for a while hoping for a solution. Nothing seemed to work. I remembered the second remote that I had purchased as I mentioned earlier. If I could just remember where I put it ……lol,

After a quite exhaustive search the second unit was located under the boat seat storage.

I opened the second remote, sync’d it up with the motor, and the problem was resolved. Big relief. This second unit run’s about $120 on amazon. Looks like Ill need to buy another backup in case this situation ever re-occurs.

Hope this was helpful…..

If you bought the MotorGuide XI3 new, they should replace it, if it was used, I guess you did the best thing, buy another one. Glad you got it figured out, by the way, did it have a new battery in the remote, old batteries can cause the same problem.

I went ahead and replaced the batteries when I got home, And it was still a little crazy. I will contact them ,. I have had it for about 3 years
