May 26 Mantua

Went to Mantua yesterday morning around 7 AM. with Joe, my son inlaw.
The wind was up all the way there. We got to the parking lot at the North end and found the wind was calming down so we launched.
Water felt warmer than the air upper 50’s but it was cloudy and choppy. While there was a chop no fish were caught. Every now and then the wind would flatten and the Trout would come up to the surface. I caught a nice little Cutthroat 19 inch. Nice fight! Didnt know they planted cutts in Mantua..
Then the wind came back up so I headed in. Joe stayed for a bit longer and caught a nice Bass. He was throwing a 3 inch Cutter bug with a bullet weight. Crawling it in the bottom he found a spot were the Bass were preparing to spawn.
I never touched one. Need to have a very slow presentation I guess.
Still waiting for Mother nature to stop being such a drama queen.

Thats a very nice cut. Good to see someone getting some action there. Saw some folks there a couple weeks ago who were having good success with a Rapala.

:sunglasses:Glad you guys found something…even if you didn’t exactly tear them up.

Mama Nature needs to get back on her meds She has made her point. She is in control and we mere mortals are totally subject to her moods.

(Kinda like marriage)

Here’s a pic of a similar sized cutt caught through the ice a few years ago.

Nice job, Toadly!

Cutts are some beautiful fish. I agree, this weather has got to stop! Utah is changing from a Desert to a rainforest (minus the forest part) really fast! I liked living in a desery, lets get that back.

Nice catch. I heard they had planted some Cuts in there. Remember if you were fishing you weren’t working so that is good!!!

Nice report Todd, thanks. Yeah - I’d seen that on the stocking report - bit earlier this month - some 18-22" inchers, but only a few hundred. Seems Willard pond got some too. Maybe they’ll help thin out the squat perch population - thicken up some of them buggers!

Seems like we can get 1 warm day, then three wet crappy days to follow. If we could just pull a few warm ones together in a row…

Does sound like the bass are starting to wake up. Good to hear. I’m torn between Newton and Mantua if I can get a break tomorrow. I’m ready to give the cats a break, and go find some bass.

The bass are definitely starting to come in shallow to spawn. Been camping at Mantua this weekend and have done well. Crazy rigged senkos has been the hot lure for me.

Texas rigged power bait worms caught me a couple bass this afternoon. But the storm rolling in promptly put an end to any kind of hot fishing streak.

If the weather does what it’s predicted to this week then next weekend should be really good at all waters that need some temperature increases. :sunglasses:

Unfortunately the quick heat up will most likely cause more water problems than it solves. [crazy]
