If I don’t get out on the ice before Friday, I think I’m gonna croak. Was pondering Mantua for one shot if anybody has been scoring on the perch. How about it? Anybody been successful up there or would the Rock be a whole lot safer bet?

I have been doing ok on Mantua with maggots and tiny hair jigs but not sure if I would trust the ice. Yesterday was about 5-7 inches of ice but 2 inches of water on top. The ice was starting to rot underneath. If you go just plan on punching a lot of holes and keep moving. If you have a fish finder just keep checking holes until you see something then drop down about a foot of the bottom.

PS…most guys like to have me take the lead on the ice. If it will hold my “substantial” bulk, anyone else has it made.
As the ice rots make sure you take every precaution.
There is hundreds of methane seeps in there and they will be opening up thin spots again.
Plus be aware of the 5 inlet areas where there has been thin ice and open water all season.
Mantua is one of the most dangerous places to ice fish as far as potential to go through. $5.00 for a set of ice picks to save your life is not much.
I was up there last friday (before these last few rain storms), and was having success. We fished near the docks and eventually moved out toward the middle part of the lake. We caught most of our fish- trout, perch, and bass, out toward the middle. The best lure was a pink/white glowing ice fly, tipped with meal worm.
The ice was about 5 or 6 inches thick, but that was before all this recent rain.
Hoping to get back out there this saturday.
