Planning for a day to fish Mantua at the beginning of June. I have never fished there and i was hoping for some advice on what to use, where to fish at, etc. All help is appreciated!
Give us some details in what your intersted in catching..?? That pond has quite the melting pot of species.. Largemouth bass, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Rainbows, Cuttbows , Albinos and the elusive Yellowstones..
I am mainly interested in catching some perch, because i haven’t had much luck at Pineview or anywhere else. I would also enjoy to catch some LM Bass.
Went to Mantua at the beginning of the week and didn’t hook into a single perch or bluegill for that matter. Everything we caught was either bass or trout. Spinners and small swim baits seemed to work best for bass.
See lots of folks fishing north of the dock along the rocks. Last fall schools of small bluegill and perch were all over in the sandy swimming area. My son and friend filled a cooler with small perch and bluegill. Lots around the dock, and some bass there too.
I caught my first bass in 20 years (1 pounder) and hooked up another that broke off right at the boat! Argh - looked twice the size.
We had good action just outside the buoys - along the weeds next to a droppoff. Trolling lead to too many lost lures and snags at end of summer. But I did land one 17" rainbow.
But you see lots of boats go across to the far side, or into the northern end and anchor or float along.
Small jigs - white curly tail with pink head worked well on the bass. Worms and bobbers did well for BG and perch. Had some bigger perch following our jigs midlake. The bass really came on towards sunset.
In fishing Mantua, it has always been a case of me finding the depth of water that the active fish are in. I have found them in water from 5’ to 14’ when fishing from my boat. The first need is to find an opening in the weeds and then anchor up to keep the boat in the opening. If the fish are at that depth I have usually found fast action – especially for the bluegills. If I don’t catch fish within a short time I move and locate a another opening in the weeds that is either deeper or shallower than the water I have already tried. Small jigs with small hoops tipped with night crawlers will catch bluegills and perch.
Mantua would be so much nicer if not for the ‘power crowd’ or water skiers. Small reservoir that fills up every summer with kids and their daddy’s boat.
So in other words, enjoy it now. It’s about to turn into a zoo. ![]()
