Hit the lower provo near utah lake yesterday. The fishing was slow. only caught 5 white bass. I was using a panther martin. All the people that were fishing there i spoke to said they hadn’t caught anything. anyone know why its so slow. i heard it was on fire a couple of days ago. and will it warm up again or is the spawn over? also anyone done well at deer creek for the smallmouth lately?
That spot turned off for me too. I’ll be hitting deer creek in the morning so I’ll let ya know if the smallies come out to play.
The main spawn was probably over by mid May. But, white bass will still remain in the river to feed and to find water temps or clarity they prefer to whatever is going on in the main lake.
Their main reason for being upriver right now is the hatching fry of both their own and other species. As the new hatchlings move down the river and out into the lake, the whities will follow. Look for them now in and around the reeds all around the lake. Sometimes you will see them rolling and splashing way back in the structure. Hard to fish them then, but you can get them along the edges with spinners, small jigs under bobbers or a piece of worm under a bobber.
White bass are not territorial. They move around a lot. You will usually find them where their groceries are.
I think there is water being discharged from Deercreek. I heard of increased flow in the Provo last week. This could contribute to the inactivity.
I seem to recall that they did the same thing last year…during the June sucker spawn.
Last spawning occurred within the first week of June. I’m pretty sure they are done for the year. White bass will be very slow now until at least August 1 when they move into harbors and shore to feed on young of the year white bass. They loove to eat their kids. lol.
You’re right the June suckers spawned in mid may and aint one to be seen around now. The water came up after the spawn was over. I can’t wait for it to come back down.
