where can I get some live minnows close to Spanish Fork. Or is it eligal to use them in Utah??
Cant use live minnows in Utah!
you can get them out of most the ditchs and creeks that run into utah lake.. you can use fresh dead minnows. or as i call them mostley dead minnows.. just go to sportsmans and get some minnow traps put some dog food it in and try some places tell ya find the minnows..
good luck![sly]
Yup +1 to dead, or nearly dead. No live-uns. You can use live crayfish - on the lake you caught them from.
Check the regs…
One thing I’m not sure about - it what kind of minnows are permissible, and are there some that are not? I know game-fish are verboten. But what about something like dead goldfish from Petsmart? Are they permissible, or must one collect, or purchase certain ‘brands’ - like chub, carp, or other suitable minnows or fry fish? I DO know for sure that Willards shad are a no-no, which I still don’t get, but such it is.
Its going to be hell trying to find minnows around south utah county I have been looking myself setting traps and no luck the best is go to the store and buy them or wait till summer adnd catch them.[fishin]
We’ve been using carp cut into small strips with good success. One carp goes a long way…
can you catch them in winter? or are your best chances in summer months?
Well… new to it, so not sure, sorry. I caught one Thanksgiving mnorning at willard so I’ve been using that one.
i have caught minnows under the ice befor.. it’s not that hard.. just need a 10 inch hole. and a wire hook to turn the minnow trap to get it back through the hole.. can get do-dads that way to up at scofield.. there a area down here in sanpete that i can go brake the ice with my bar and put the trap in over night and go the next day and brake the ice up again and have full traps of shiners and chub… it’s not as easy in the winter but can be done..
You can make a minnow trap out of one of those big 3-liter bottles of soda. Youtube the videos, but basically cut the top off, cut the spout off the top, turn it around and put it back into the bottle, so the bottle top is basically inside out. Then staple or stitch it, and drill/cut a bunch of holes in the bottle. Tie on a string to get it back, toss some rocks in, and a ball of barely wet oatmeal.
Any ditch or creek close to UL or the Great Salt Lake marshes should have tons of chubs and baby carp.
