went to little dell this morning before work just to mess around, nothing serious i just wanted to get out of the city and breath some fresh air. got there at about 8 am and it was so freakin windy it was almost impossible to fish but we proceeded. the kastmasters and spinners were getting followers but no takes. started fishing a fly and a bubble with a wooly bugger that was olive colored and i caught 2 real small cuttys like 12 inches. so since my fly rod got ripped off a couple of weeks ago i havnt had a fly rod to use[frown], dangitt. my dad started getting them on dries using an BWO in a emerger pattern and he caught a bunch of decent 15 inch cuttys with nice red markings on em. after my dad was getting them on dries i decided to make a mcgiver rig with a water bubble filled up about a quarter full and then putting a BWO behind it about 6 feet and i was surprised about how many fish i got with that rig on a spin caster. no big fish this trip and i have only gotten 3 over 20 inches this year which usually is in the double digits by this time so i think there are so many small ones now that its hard to not hook a small one first. walked up to the inlet to see if i could see any large fish trying to get up the creek to spawn and what do you know there were about 200 fish in a school that could not make it up the creek since it has dropped so much and its just a trickle now. some bigguns in there but i let it be due to them spawing and i dont know if that was considered part of the creek or not even though it was part of lake i felt that they should be left be cause they were all really red with spawing colors, a couiple of atleast 24 inchers sitting in that spot and i saw what i thought was a brookie cauese it didnt look like all the others in there cause it was really dark. so all in all it was nice to get out and enjoy nature,
but on a side note i was very disgusted about how many cheese hooks i saw on shore with big bundles of used line and empty worm and powerbait containers so it seems that the bait fisherman are still going and breaking the rules with that lake cuase i was there sunday mornin and not of that stuff was there, also on the way out we saw a couple guys fishing with bobbers away from all the people so we gave the poaching hotline a call and they said they were on it so that was reassuring.STOP BAITFISHING LITTLE DELL IT IS ILLEGAL in case people didnt know that . thanks guys
Nice. My buddy called me the other day and told me the parking fee alone is worth looking at the spawners in the creek. Too bad that creek is closed till July something. Oh well. I at least fished it the very last day it was open.
As for the bobber rigs that doesn’t nessarrily mean they are using bait. I have used bobbers with marabous and such. I always check to see if they keep bringing it in and re-applying something. Even then they could just be clearing moss and weeds off the rig. Still no harm in calling them in so good on you.
ya i didnt get to that but they were applying worms about every other time theyd bring it in they were messing with a container and then there hook, so i think it was worms or salmon eggs or something, also they were setting there pole up on sticks and sitting in a chair, classic baitfisherman stance, but ya i hope some of those bigguns in there stick around until the creek opens back up then itll be a fun little creek, plus there are some decent little brookies that are fun.
we still need to fish it sometime, i just wish i didnt work every day man so i could fish as much as you and your bro, i get jealous sometimes[;)] but hey atleast i get out once a week instead of not going at all.
Well I am not getting out much more this week. I have an infected impacted tooth that will require surgery in the coming days. It hurts bad enough that last night I stayed home instead of getting out on the rivers. Might go out tomorrow though to get my fix.
Brook trout are fall spawners, not that you didnt see one with the mess of cutthroat, but it would be rare. Good on ya for not fishing for the spawners. Even though it might be legal, I say leave 'em be for their sake.
ya i think it might of been an off colored cutty but not sure, it also seemed like they were in full spawning mode cause i was standing right there like a foot from shore and they werent even spooked or phased by me being there so i dont even know if they would have hit a dry, some beautys though.
Good on ya, Jazz. But just remember, every time you mention that lake, a lot of lurkers are reading this. I am betting the attraction is the internets and the users fault.
I have seen lakes turn to crap because of over exposure, good luck on your favorite.
Ive got to get up to dell more. I live in the aves but based on a few skunk trips I always pass it by. I also have seen many bait fishing left overs… And what appears to be bait fisherman. Last year I saw 5/6 of them sneaking up the creek before it was opened… I kayak fish so its nice to hit water with motor-less regs every once in a while.
Agreed. I rarely post reports on the forum anymore for this exact reason. I have shared a specific spot on here only to find a half dozen boats parked on it the following weekend…
Psshh, Little Dell is no secret. It’s one of the closest lakes to SLC. Making sure people know the cuts are catch and release only is the main concern. I’ve been dominating the throats with a terestrial tied to a spinning setup near dusk. During the day anyone can catch them on a Jakes. It’s really nothing to worry about. The day you can’t catch 18" cuts there is the day I need to show you how to do it. The fishing pressure is barely existant compared to other fisheries, I’m honestly surprised there is a thread about this.

Of course it’s no secret. But because of reports like these, it’s become quite popular. Especially to the bait crowd.
of course its no secret i practically learned how to dry fly fish on that lake when i was 10 so it wasnt to make people want to go there more and break the rules it was simply to let fellow anglers know who fish it that there is no bait allowed and its C&R, that lake is always crowded all the time whether it be 1 angler with a bunch of kayakers or hikers or the opposite. cause most of the time i see people use bait there its in plain site right by the lower parking lot and they act like they have no idea, it will never have high fishing pressure to the extreme because of those regs{which most people know how to read a sign at the lake}, plus now you will have to pay even to park in the upper spot because they are making the area east of that where people park in a no parking zone, i feel like it needs to be known about what is going on up there cause its not getting any better the last 3 years there, so thats the reason for the thread, simply information not encouragement to do wrong there.
i also dont get how a post like this appeals to bait fisherman when its about not fishing bait and its illegal there, apparently giving accurate info about a place when it needs to be said is encouragent? i dont get that, maybe if i was saying that i caught so many on worms or PB yesterday morning and that i had 4 strung up on the stringer than ya but saying that the baitfishing is illegal and needs to stop, thats not encouragement.
i just wont post on it anymore and it can continue how its has been the last 3 years or you can try to do something about it, i for one want rules to be followed cause they are there for a reason, ill just keep quiet about it so the same guys that are doing it can continue[:/].ohwell
Jazz, you have good intentions, but posting it “HERE” is not going to solve the problem but create a bigger one. I have been fishing that lake for many, and I mean MANY years as well. Crowds were NEVER! a problem till a year or two ago, and I am sure you know what I am talking about.
Go back and read a few of those posts. There is always one or more “I didn’t know you could fish that lake” comments, so yes while it is public, it was NOT exploited…till now.
But, Jazzman, you are a great guy and a fisher so please don’t take this the wrong way.
