I’ve taken several days off lately to take the kids fishing before school gets going and it’s been well worth it.
Last week I took 5 of the kids up to Steinaker to try for some of the tagged trout in the summer fun event. My 6 year old caught a fish that must have been previously tagged, caught and then released by someone else. It had a small tear mark right where the tag would have been and it was the right size class at 18". We felt a little gyped, but oh well [crazy]. We caught several other trout, bass and bluegill. Several of the bluegill were in the nice 8-9.5" size which was a nice surprize.
The next day my 16 year old boy and I took the tubes up to Red Fleet to try for some walleye. We fished from 10’ to 50’ and threw crankbaits, drifted jigs and worms, dragged crawler harnesses and couldn’t raise a walleye. However, we found plenty of LM bass, bluegill, and nice trout willing to bite these same rigs.
The next day after that we piled the whole family in the Suburban and headed to Uinta River to fish and play. Didn’t have much time to fish, but we caught several small browns and rainbows.
Yesterday we tried for some tiger musky at Bullock but after a couple of hours of no indication of any fish interest we moved on to Pelican Lake. Good move!
Since we were after musky, I didn’t have my usual bass bag so all I had to use was crankbait and large plastics. My son had a few other things to try.The water is low and submerged weeds were a major issue but we caught bass on about everything we threw at them, deep cranks, shallow cranks, lipless cranks, poppers, spinnerbait, plastic worms. The best part was that my son got his personal best bass today, a 21" toad. He eclipsed my 19" bass. What a thrill to watch him fight it, carefully lip it, photograph it and happily release it. I left the choice to him and he said he never thought of keeping it. He said it was awsome watching that big ol’ bass swim away so we can catch him next year. We didn’t try for bluegill but they were active and I’m sure we could have whacked them good too.
