Laker from a tube

Hey all. I have a different question. I’m not sure if anyone knows the answer to it… maybe TD? Anyways, I’ve always wanted to catch a laker, but without a boat it’s pretty difficult. I’ve heard of people catching lakers from tubes while vertical jigging. It sounds plausible. However, because of the obvious limitations associated with a tube, I’m at a loss of where to try this. I’m willing to try Fish, FG, or Bear, but have absolutely no idea where on these lakes to go. Does anyone have any ideas of some deep coves or something on one of these lakes that could be reasonably accessed by tube? Or which lake would be best to venture onto with a tube? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve thought the same thing, I have a boat and toon but I’m no mack fisherman. I could work an area a lot slower in my toon without having the experience of fishing for macks. The problems I would have is a finder, lack of experience and lack of getting my butt back to shore in a hurry in case things got nasty. The couple times that I’ve purposely fished for macks I was way out in open water and fishing on deep water humps. I would not feel safe in my toon out there with the ‘big’ boats.
Fish Lake may be an option as it is not as big as FG but I wouldn’t know where to fish. Bear Lake is beautiful but I only know about the rock piles and FG is HUGE! with plenty of places to access deep water from the shoreline…again, no idea where to fish for macks without going into big open water.

I made a post similar to this earlier this season. Hope it helps!

I suppose I should have done a cursory search. Some great info on that link. I was particularly intrigued with Bear Lake lake trout spawn. I’d never really considered the lake trout spawn. Anyone know much about their spawning patterns? Is it usually shallower than most times of the year? Is it just in Bear Lake? What kind of structure do they prefer for spawning?

Go to Buckboard or Sheep Creek Bay in late April-early May. If you just want a 3-8 pound laker, jigging one this size up is relatively easy close to shore in 15-30 feet of water. Same goes in early November. Good chance for nice 'bows and browns also.

I’ve caught plenty of Lake Trout at FG from my tube. However, as previously stated they’re quite a kick from shore. If you want specifics send me a pm and I’ll tell you everything I know.

Jon,

I was going to reply to you personally but have been busy - I posted a report on ling fishing / float tubing on the Wyoming board.

I caught about a 7-8 lber a few nights ago inside the buckboard cove. Hit a jigging spoon with some minnows.

Also managed a ling and a few ling hits. Nothing hot and fast though - I personally think the burbot have moved out deep. I wouldn’t fish anything less than 30-40 feet - but I fished those depths without luck too.

The gorge is a fun place to float tube at night - the wind is pretty much non-existent - the first night I went it was glass. I’m sure if you got out in some deeper water with some tube jigs you could find some active lakers.

Glad you were able to find a burbot! Too bad it wasn’t faster, but maybe next time it will be better. Nice job on the Laker. It’s encouraging to hear that it can be done. Night fishing is fun. I may have to give that a try one of these days.
