Kuai fishing?

Alright going to kuai in april does anyone have any ideas or good fishing guides in mind? I will be there a week so there is definetly time to fish. give me any ides you guys have. thanks a bunch

I got a few hours fishing in on a couple mornings on a trip about 3 years ago. Hard to get away from family but worth it. I fished on my own off the cliffs next to Nawilwili Harbor. Water gets deep very fast and lots of small fish up top that where fun to catch. Of course where you have lots of small fish and deep water big fish hang out below and occasionally strike. I assume they where Ulua which they correctly say put to shame any bass on steroids. I just wasn’t prepared to handle fish like that with 12 lb test. The reel would start screaming and any effort to slow it down before getting spooled resulted in broken line. The lava is also sharp and cuts line easily. I also recall fishing near a small stream flowing into the ocean in walking distance to our resort in Poipu. I know I caught some fish but what I remember most were tons of sea turtles up the stream inlet. I know you can get a charter out of Nawilwili Harbor but never had time. I was told best just to inquire in person a day or 2 before as they don’t seem to advertise much. Didn’t do any fresh water but remember they do have peacock bass somewhere and a very limited rainbow trout season as well in some reservoirs and stream in Waimea Canyon. If I had to do it again I’d fished those cliffs again and be prepared for those 50 + lb superbass on steroids.

Fished on KAI BEAR Sportfishing Charters. there good.Go to www.kaibearsportfishing.com check them out.:sunglasses:

Hey thanks for the info guys.

I too fished from the shores there. On the southern side of the island on vacation.

Fishing was slow for me. Would be a lot faster now, knowing what I learned.

I found a fish shop there in town the dude sells paint and fishing tackle. Cool combination. Go in there and ask him where to fish and how to do it.

I told him I wanted to catch Papio. He took me over to the lures, gave me a plug and said “dis catch Papio”.

Took it home to the hotel, fished the plug, and caught Papio. It was a popper plug. Which is cool, because you get to watch the fish race up and slap it.

I fished along the beaches at Maui. After shrimp, lures, etc I got a tip from the locals and caught a couple on bread dough.

:slight_smile:Hey i could be your guide. We could learn to fish it together. Has long as you pay my way. i will pay for the fishing license. Sound like a good idea? Good luck have fun.[fishin] pineviewfisher

WATCHOUT, Sounds like he is scamming you.. You don’t need a license to fish from the shore, you just fish.
See, I have been there before.. I’d be a better guide. Pay my way instead :sunglasses:
Enjoy your trip. It’s a lot of fun there. Don’t forget to snorkel Tunnels Beach. That was the most memorable snorkeling I did there. But, now that I think of it, if you go this time of year, tunnels might be full of huge surf that you don’t want to mess with getting in the water.

I’ve fished with kai bear also and they’re pretty good and a fun crew to be around. We had blast and caught some pretty neat fish too. The group just after or before us (i can’t really remember) caught a monster marlin.

I have been to Kuai twice now and hope for a few more visits !!!

I’d say to do the charters as they will put you into the big fish Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi if that is what you are after. The surf fishing where I was at had too many distractions, (BIKINIS) !!! LOL

Try to do a boat tour on the Na pali Coast State Park, Exellent scenery!!! You may be a little late for whale watching though. A tour company I can recomend is Holo Holo, that departs from Port Arthur, or Hanapepe.
Island Helicopter Tours was fantastic as well !!!

What time can I expect you to pick me up???

Seriously, man, I’m a little jealous. GO, HAVE FUN, ENJOY!!!

Oops, Lahaila is the the charter we used. got into some good wahoo, 25 to 30 lb. Hold on !!!

Also check out BUBBA’S BURGERS in Kapa’a and Princeville!!! Kapa’a is better !!! Send me some pics and a T- shirt.
