I fished the gorge for kokes and posted shortly after my trip about my dismay in not catching the kokanee there. Well, I have studied, purchased some more Rocky Mountain Tackle, dodgers, squid, bugs and spoons and I am dying to get back out!
Living in Ogden, I understand there are a couple of waters with kokes in them that are much closer to me than the gorge.
Has anyone successfully fished Porcupine or Causey for the Kokanee?
What is the kokanee population like in these lakes? What are the the best ways to catch these silver rockets on these lakes.

When I was in school up at USU I remember being out with some friends at Porcupine and seeing TONS of Kokes moving up the river/stream that feeds the lake… I think I have some pics somewhere of me reaching in and picking one up for a photo opp.
I have never fished it so I don’t know how Porcupine fishes but I do know the kokes are in there
Porcupine is my favorite spot in the world. We were up there for 2 weekends in a row camping and ate fresh kokes every night and morning. I bet our camp pulled out close to 100 kokes, (legally) no joke. There are alot of smaller kokes in there but they are very tasty and you always have the potential of pulling out a nice one. We put the boat in the very back and you definately want to be on the water early, the bite is better. We troll with pop gear and wedding rings tipped with a worm. the color of the wedding ring is where you catch the fish, i have numerous colors so i switch until i find what is attracting them. We also used dodgers with a z-ray or a tazmanian devil and we caught em like that too. This was in June and July has shown to be a lot slower but they are in there. Also have caught some very nice sized browns, i got a 2lb 11oz brown out of there and 2 other ones over 2 lbs also. my good buddy is going to be up there this weekend, long haired rough looking guy, fishes in a tan aluminum boat probably 18 footer and got him a brand new 25HP motor on it. Likes to talk alot too so if you see him hollar at him and he might help you out, tell him Lisa sent ya. lol
I will be at causey at 6am. We should do very well after last weekend. Use the same things as ice fishing.[;)]
The only down side to Causey is that you really can’t launch a boat there…unless you can carry it. Just ask Jason how much fun that can be.
Are motorized boats allowed on that lake? I recall someone mentioning that minimal HP only is allowed, but I’m not for sure on that.
if you can carry it on you can use it. no motor rating on the lake , but it is wakeless

Just as the others have mentioned there are Kokes in both lakes and you can catch them in both. As TKB said you will need to hand carry your boat down to the water to fish on Causey but Pockupine should be no problem. We have used the RMT gear that you have with great success, also Shasta gear works great there as well. We use down riggers at the depth the fish are being marked, my last trip we caught them at 40 ft, it might be deeper now. There are a lot of kokes in Porkupine, that is why the limit is 12 kokes, Causey the limit is 4. We troll around 2 mph and use humdingers and crip lures behind sling blades, I know one of them is the UV squid and the other has a smilie type blade that is similar to the wedding ring. petty how would it be launging at porci ive seen the ramp earlieer in the year abd it didnt look to bad got a 22 trophy thanks.
you could do it, but if it was me i dont think id rick it.

We will be up ther in my 12’er tomorrow. Sort of a bft mini-flotilla. Djremo, myself, p4l and ateve will be there as well as some other friends. If your boat is light it shouldn’t be a problem. I have done it many times.

Those who participated in teh mini flotilla, how did you do?
WH2 and others who may know. I read the DWR info and it suggested that at one time porkupine was stocked with macinaw. Has anyone caught one in there. It seems as if it would be deep enough to hold them, if a thermocline did not wipe out the oxygen in the deep water?
I have been to porkupine once many years ago. I took the road from Eden over the top to Avon.
I live in Ogden what is the best way to get to Porkupine?
I fish porcupine alot, every season and i have never caught or heard of anyone catching mackinaw out of there.
The view goin over Avon is the most scenic drive but not always the fastest because of the condition of the road at times. The only other way i know of getting there is thru sardine canyon and then thru hyrum. There is a little short cut though. When you come out of sardine canyon you take the first right turn you can, as soon as you come out of the canyon, now on this road there is a bend with a Y in it and you’ll see the other road goin off into the distance to your right, take that Y in the road and it takes you on a little dirt road that comes out in Paradise I think, its a little shorter but i like it cause i see more wildlife on that road, especially some beautiful pheasants. It is very possible but it would have been a long time ago. I don’t remember any being stocked there in the last twenty years or so. Although there was a period of time where I did not go to the pig much. I can’t tell you about the oxy in the deep water but I have marked fish in water there that was over 100 ft deep. So there are fish in the deeper water but I can’t tell you if the oxy is good there the whole year. The dirt road you took across the avon liberty pass is the shortest route but the best route, especially if you are towing a boat, would be to go through Hyrum and take the road to Avon. Lisa - thanks for the help I appreciate your posts. When you tie a trailer (wedding rings, squid spoon etc) onto a flasher or popgear, what type of knot do you use on the popgear/flasher end of the leader?
Also, I have never fished with popgear before, what would you suggest as far as color size etc. thanks
well if you buy a pop gear there is a paper in them that is very helpful but overall i use the brass/silver blades for the most part right now, especially when the water is dirty and hard to see in, I use the 5 blade pop gear, meaning there are 5 blades on the pop gear, they are the medium size ones. I also use a rubber in between my pop gear and leader so the bite has some absorbtion and they keep coming back until you hook that lip. I dont know the names of knots but its the only knot i’ve known and use it on everything. You put the line thru the hole twist it 6 or 7 times and put the line thru the loop at the end near the hook and then thru the loop at the other end of the knot and spit and pull. at least i think thats how it goes, never had to explain how to tie a know before sorry if it doesnt make sense, i’m sure some smart fish person can name it but that wouldnt be me, i just know how to catch em not write a book about em.[;)]
