This is for all you kayak fisherman out there (guessing there aren’t that many as I havn’t seen any). Do you enjoy fishing from a kayak? Is it comfortable enough to fish for hours at a time? Do you take it out on big lakes or just stick to the smaller ponds? What brand of kayak do you have or recommend? I have a float tube that works but fishing from a a kayak seems to have some advantages. First would be the speed at which you can travel (swimming across a lake in a float tube isn’t really viable). Second, in colder weather it would be nice to be out of the water rather then have half of your body submerged. I’ve looked at different ones on amazon and this one seems like a pretty great deat: Amazon.com : Sea Eagle SE330 Two Person Inflatable Sport Kayak Canoe Boat with Two Seats, Two Paddles and Pump. : Sports & Outdoors. If anyone on this board has this one let me know what you think of it.
Skip the inflatable kayak. Get something durable. I was in Dick’s sporting goods a couple weeks a go and they had some deeply discounted kayaks for sale starting just a bit more than that. Or get an used kayak . I kayak lakes big and small. Lake Powell has nice back coves for Kayaking and just stick close to shore in open water unless crossing. I kayak fish at least one trip a year in the ocean as well. Get a rod holder for the kayak. If you have a few bucks to spend look into the couple of the kayaks that you can pedal. Your legs are a lot stronger than arms and leaves your hands free to fish. It’s not for those that like to drink beer and fatten up while fishing
. I like to exercise while fishing so do most of it wading or from a kayak.
Hey thanks for the info, I’ll have to go see what they have at Dick’s. I don’t want to spend more than $250 so hopefully they have some in that price range. Getting a work out sounds like an added bonus to me, I’ve waded many a river and don’t mind taking a hike to get to where the fishing is. I would love to get down to Powell and explore some of the back bays and coves in it! Just curious, what kind of kayak do you have and how much did it cost?
Unless you are absolutely limited on space, I also agree about staying away from an inflatable. I haven’t yet put it into the water because I got it after the lakes froze, but I have the Ocean Prowler, 13 feet. This is not actually the one I really wanted but it should work. You want to make sure you have space, stability and maneuverability.
My ideal kayak is the Hobie Pro Angler. I almost bought one in California but had issues with transporting back to Utah. Plus, after getting the accessories it would have been over 3k, so it’s more than a lot of boats.
Not sure what good options you have in the less than 300 price range. I would stick with a float tube with that kind of money.
I have a Wilderness System Pungo 100 that I got for $500 and an Emotion Glyde that I got for $350. I’m a 170 lbs so these are adequate for me. They wouldn’t work for someone over 200 lbs. I got both new and had to look around to find them at these prices. I was in Dick’s in the Gateway for something else and just noticed that a few descent basic kayaks were going for the best prices I’ve ever seen. Would have picked one up if I didn’t already have 2. I think they started at about $250 and several below $300.
Have you thought about a canoe? love mine. not as fast as a kayak, i’ll give you that, but you get to sit up a little off the water, change positions once-in-a-while, and when you get old and lazy like me, you can put a motor on it pretty easy.
if you don’t mind “used” you might try KSL, i’ve seen a few kayaks there. not many canoes though. i think those that have them - keep 'em-
that looks like a heck of boat that Ktrout has. gonna be some fun had with that thing.
