They are made with 5 minute, 2 part epoxy with a tiny drop of food dye or fabric paint added. Bead chain “eyes” are tied onto the hook with a figure eight tie. Then the epoxy is mixed, the color added, and the eyes are coated while rotating the vise. When enough has been added you continue turning until it sets. Later the rest of the fly is dressed to suit.
They’re primarily used for bonefish in shallow, still water. They fish right on the bottom. The hook rides up to avoid snagging. I’ve only recently made these so I haven’t used them yet. I’ve been told that the carp really like them. Any fish that feeds on the bottom would probably go for them, too.

… does the epoxy allow it to float at all… like you were using a sinking line would it be able to float up from the bottom at all.. for fish that feed near but not on the bottom..
reason I am asking is I am thinking they could also be used for catfish and maybe some trout.. or bass.. or crappie feeding just above the bottom.. or just below the surface.. especially in shallow waters..

These are tied on #6 and # 8 hooks. The colored epoxy is spread around with a toothpick as I turn the fly in my rotary vise. It doesn’t go on very evenly but as it turns and the epoxy runs, it takes on a nice shape. By the time it starts to set it has the desired profile.
**The epoxy sinks, which is what you want it to do for carp. The bead chain also takes it down. This is definitely for bottom feeders. For a floating fly you could use foam or cork glued to the hook. **
**I can’t imagine why other species wouldn’t take it as is. I’ve caught very few catfish on flies, but I know trout take things off the bottom. **
