East Canyon could maybe be thrown on the “possible” list?? Good parking space at the main ramp, access is usually good to the area as they maintain the road, and guaranteed fish catching. Just to throw out another idea.
Thanks for the suggestion, how soon does it freeze over on average? Is it a state park? If a state park they have a whole bunch of red tape that makes things more difficult to deal with, not to mention fees that we would have to pay to do a service event. I like the location though if it could work. Thanks Jeff
I remember last winter everyone complaining about the local law at Mantua giving out parking and other tickets very freely. arn’t you asking for trouble by inviting alot of people up there? He may see it as a good opportunity to help the town coffers.
Gary, Yes and no, the reason folks were getting tickets there was because they were parking in a section of road that was clearly marked as no parking, (this was so vehicles from that funky angled road could make their turns)… So yes they were writing tickets, but it’s cause folks didn’t pay attention to signs and weren’t thinking about anyone that may need to make a turn at that intersection… They made the cop to be a bad guy and tried to make you think you couldn’t park anywhere up there, but when I got there it wasn’t really the case, it was a small area and I think they were trying to discourage folks from fishing at Mantua… So I think if we talk to them I’ll bet they will work with us and help us make this happen… I’d think they will make more off sales tax than tickets from this event.. Later J
Everytime I go to Mantua in the winter there’s some clown parked in between those signs. Then later that night complaining about getting a ticket.
I understand when you get there late and it’s hard to find close parking that area looks pretty tempting but it’s got a reason for why they don’t want you to park there, so it’s pretty much their own fault if they get ticketed. There’s usually parking 50 yards down the road, they just don’t want to walk that far. But I guess that’s human nature. Later J
I understand what wyoguy is saying and it most likely will happen folks getting tickets. I’d make all attending WELL AWARE especially if they have never been to Mantua.
Plus when I work things like this for our chapter I do the leg work beforehand making sure all is good with agencies then I post the info for those interested. Including if you plan on possibly having vendors they may require a license and the local city/town may require a cut of the take. Just saying and that may not be the case.
Also the city of Brigham along with Mantua as I recall put on some type of ice gathering every year. If they do you could approach them and see about this event also being part of their ice event.
Sounds like a nice adventure and good luck with it but again I’ve always done all the leg work first with permits and such if required making agencies aware of what we’d like to do. Have a great event.
I’m thinking of a northern show (mantua, hyrum), central (deer creek, jordenal ) Southern/central (fish lake, Panguitch)
Lots of other option. By having several shows it wouldn’t over crowd small locations. It does sound like a big job. Maybe one team for each location.
Also thought each area could have its own year, then different people could get involved and areas served.
Great idea I would help.
I can let all now I do this type of stuff for our Muskie Chapter and depending on agencies a PAID permit is required. With after event paperwork for financial info. So guess folks wanting to do these type of events need to be aware and ask the questions of agency entities over bodies of water one wants to do something on. For us we have to secure a PAID permit from US Forest Service months in advance. Any vendors or sponsors must be licensed and any revenue must be reported after event usually within 30 days.
So again good luck and have an awesome event.
Trust me sounds like a great time and I’m not intentionally tossing a turd in the punch bowl but spur of the moment things great intentions can cause problems to arise especially if a large gathering will happen.
First question I’d be asking who manages Mantua? Is it Brigham City or Mantua, BLM or Forest Service? Will permits be required? What about Vendors/Sponsors???
Hey I really like those ideas and would love to have you help us. Thanks J
I’ve been thinking a lot about location for the event. The more accessible the venue is the more people will attend. The population center of Utah is in Lehi; I couldn’t get the center for the Wasatch Front but would bet it is somewhere in the SLC area. Mantua is a bit far for those of us at the south end down here, but even so it is only 1:41 to drive there for me. A half hour longer for ice_man. But if you are spearheading it, it might be best for you to have it up there close to you. I looked at most of the popular lakes in the more centralized area and also thought that East Canyon could be a good spot, but I know nothing about it. Whatever we decide, let’s do it!
… and the local city/town may require a cut of the take. …
We get an exception to this by flying the pirate flag.

Awesome Idea - I’d definitely volunteer to help.
Thorne Bros in Blaine, MN puts on a show every year but they usually do it before first ice. It’s called the “Portable Modification Get Together” where everyone brings all the cool ideas they have come up with for modifications to their sleds, shelters, etc. They have seminars from industry Pros, industry reps, food, prizes, and a chance to see all the new items for the upcoming season.
Combine a modification show off area with all the education topics - would be an awesome event.
I would love to come. Theres one in wayzata that looks cool ive been jealous to have something similar here. Im in sl county and East canyon mantua are about the same to me. Pineview can be really fun for kids if the perch or crappie are biting. Just a thought
I like those ideas a bunch and it’s in line with why I think we ought to do this… I think there is plenty of interest and I know Kay has a point with hurdles to this type event, we’ve seen them with the flotilla as well, but I think we may be able to find work arounds… for instance we may not allow any sales at the site, but perhaps allow coupons to be passed out for discounts that can be used at their local stores… I think the educational benefits will be well worth the time we put in… I’ll try making some calls and see if Mantua will work with us and see what we may have to do to make it happen… I think it may be the easiest venue to get into with a short lead time. I know the state parks are more difficult and cumbersome… Anyway wish me luck… If we get positive responses I’ll start asking favors and help from all those that have expressed a desire to help… Thank you… Jeff
I appreciate your interest as well and likely this year we may start in the easiest location to get into with a short planning time, if it’s a success then following years we’ll spread out to other venues like was suggested… Thanks for the comments… Jeff
Jeff,
It looks like Craig found us a good location:

Yup except the locals don’t want big events. As an update I contacted Mantua and they said they were okay with it but said it would be up to Brigham and their guy hasn’t returned my calls so I expect it won’t happen this year but we’ll lay the ground work for next year. The road closure and parking issues this year all compound to make it bad for this year so maybe we can get ahead of the curve starting to plan now for next season. Later Jeff
