No, I’m already married. I’m talking about fishing (much more important). Leaving Monday and coming back Thursday, destination: Flaming Gorge. I’ve told myself for years that I was going up there and I’ve finally commited myself to it.
I might spend one night in a hotel or something but would like to camp by the green river if possible. I will have my boat with me which hinders me from camping where I’ve deer hunted. Are there campgrounds by the river? I’m not too fond of camping in state parks after I went to DC a couple of years ago, I felt like a sardine in a can. I will be up there during the week so it might not be too bad and I could find power to charge the trolling motor batteries at a state park. I’m not familiar with the area very well. I’d like to stay on the Utah side camping and fishing. I’ll have my 8-year old son from N. Carolina (long story) with me as well as my super trooper daughter. I will probably target bass and see if I can get into some smaller lakers for the smoker.
Anyways, I’m looking for any info you guys, and gals, could give me on camping at the Gorge and anything else you want to add. (fishing hotspots in a pm)
Either the Deer Run or Cedar Springs campgrounds are a good choice. They are about a 20 minute drive to the river, but about 500 yards (at most) from the water. You are also close to Dutch John. We stay there every year and love it. Here is a link with info and to book!
I will be staying at Deer run this weekend… Should be back sunday afternoon ish. I will keep an eye out for ya and see what I can see.
Decided to go sans the boat (family reunion) figured I would spend most of the time pulling kids on the tube rather than fishing… easier to not take the boat, that way I am not bitter about the lack of fishing.

the KOA in Manilla is very nice
The closest campgrounds to the river are, of course, near the dam, and there are several. There is no “riverside” camping on the Green unless you float to one in a raft or drift boat. If you want to be on the lake, and also fairly close to the river (20 minute drive by car), consider the Antelope Flat campground on the east side of the lake. Its not pretty, but is the least-used campground in the area. There is very little activity there because of its remoteness and desert atmosphere.
And yes, the KOA in Manila is very nice, but you will feel like a sardine, and be a 45 minute drive from the river. Lucerne campground on the lake also has electricity, but is an hour from the river. Unless you camp in an undeveloped area up in the Uintas on Forest Service land (NO FIRES PLEASE!), you are pretty much destined to be in a developed campground.
If I were you, I’d consider Mustang Ridge, Deer Run, Firefighters Memorial, and Dripping Springs, all close to both the lake and the river. Dripping Springs is only minutes from the Green, although not riverfront. Mustang is beautiful, though I don’t think it has elect.
Went camping last weekend at Anvil Draw (10 miles North of Lucerne). Awsome spot right on the water. Caught Kokes and small macs right across the channel down 45’ on needlefish behind a slingblade. In the same area saw tons of nice small mouths, just off shore. No need to spend a ton of money on boat gas, but not close to the river or power.
I’ve been searching online for anvil draw and can’t find any info. Where is it?
If you are going to the Gorge it would be wise to buy a good map of the Gorge . Try “Anvil Wash” on topozone . 41.086N / 109.569W That should get you close . Or you could just go 10 miles north of the Lucerne turn off and look for the Anvil turn off .
just continue about 10 miles past Lucern and llok for road 001 on the right side up on the top of the hill (there is a big brown sign there you can’t miss it). Take the dirt road down to the launch ramp. Just before you start dropping down to the ramp there are little roads off to the left that lead to camp spots by the water. Very protected and easy spots to beach boats large and small. Good luck with where ever you go.
Sorry I keep dragging this out. I am going to Anvil Wash. Mapquest gave me some decent directions to get there going through Carter/Mountain View to Manilla and so on. Is this the best way?
Also, it looks like I’ll be in Wyoming. I believe I need some special permit to go along with my Utah license, right?

Yes you will need to buy the Wyoming Reciprical Gorge permit. You can buy this on the way through Mountain View at the Maverik. The way you are going will work. You can’t miss Anvil, just drive straight through Manila and then past the Lucern turnoff, go up the hill and you will see the Anvil Draw sign in a few miles. The camping is alright around there but you can not have any campfires right now because there are not any designated campgrounds in that area.
Oh and dont forget you will need to buy the Recreation Pass for the number of days you will be there. $2 dollars a day and that can be bought at the Maverik also or at the Anvil Boat Ramp. The Forest Rangers have been ticketing very regularly so if you plan on using the boat ranp I wouldn’t chance not have the permit

You’ll need a recipricol stamp… Pretty sure it can be bought in Manila or Mtn View.
