I'm extremely close to swearing off fishing altogether...

make sure when your fishing in a river to cast upstream and let it drift downstream and then reel it in

This is the type of rig that I use for catfishing on the river. That shad that you caught one day would have made excellent cut bait. I usually take shad or herring (they’re nice and oily, which attracts catfish) and fillet them, cut the fillet in half short-ways and stick the hook through it a couple of times with the meat side out (skin toward the hook).

You can get these at gasp Wal-mart. The ones I use are made of steel leader with steel drops. Then get pre-setup hooks that have a nice sized hook on a piece of monofilament with a loop at the non-hook end and loop them through the rig. Toss a 2-ounce or so casting weight on the snap at the bottom of the rig (use a bigger weight for better bottom holding power in heavier current)

Works very nicely.

im not fishin for a while. since i bought 2 boxes of trilene, i have no desire to fish. i bought em, spooled up my reels, and on both reels, in one single cast both lines snapped and i lost a lot of stuff. im just gonna take a break. thinkin about a new rod…in wal mart i saw a berkeley graphite rod rated8-12lb trilene…so im kinda thinkin that would be a good one. tube said that graphite rods were really sensitive, and trielene was good line, so why not combine the 2…but yeah, im just gonna take a little break, because ive gotten pissed before, but when the brand new line just snapped and i lost all that equipment…i bout flipped…i just dropped the rod i was holding and paced for a few minutes shaking and silently muttering cuss words. if someone would have messed with me at that moment i probably would have knockled em out cold with one punch.

Humm, sounds like one of a couple things.

  • Tangled up with a sharp tooth. any of the toothy species of fish. wich would be my first guess. I know use steel leaders, I dont loose my rigs as much now…
  • bad knott. I now tie on an extra knott on the tail line befor snipping off the tail so when the line pulls it reaches that knot making the line to have to break insted of making pig tails
  • there is the other posibility that you may have gone to light on the poundage of your line for what you are targeting.

Make sure your knots are strong before trowing your rig in the water. Pull on it to test it and see if it slips. Remember to always wet your knot before tightening it.
