Calling all novice ice fishermen. This Post is for you. If there has ever been a time to take your kids Ice fishing this is the year. Scofield !! The fishing is excellant right now but the temperatures are super cold. I fished in the arm of the dam on about four inches of clear ice. Real active popping ice. I fished from nine till eleven thirty and caught approx 30-40 cut throats and rainbows. The baits I used was night crawlers millworms and chub meat. The fishing was so fast and furious at times I could only use one pole. Here is the key I fished blind today.( Meaning no fish finder) All fish were caught close to the bottom in approx. 15 feet of water. There were still a couple of open spots in the middle of the lake and some nasty looking pressure cracks. I would encourage you to get all your kids and grand kids and take them ice fishing within the next few weeks for hot fishing. But don’t forget to bring the tent and heater. I fished with 1/16 ounce jigs white glo and green. my other rig is set up with a cast master with a swivel at both ends with a 14 inch leader with a micro-jig. Heres a few pics I was hoping to help the new comers to the ice with families. PM me if you have any questions. Enjoy
Pikeman is correct I have taken my 4 year old 4 days in a row during Thanksgiving weekend he had a blast! And he has been bugging me all week to go again, It was the best time I had fishing all year long there is nothing better spending time with the kids fishing and it was ear to ear smiles all day long.
We are heading up again in the morning and Sunday too. If anyone else is heading up we will see you up there! I took these pics with the phone so they are kind of small will have the cybershot in the morning making him his own little ice fishing slideshow for the year.
Those are awesome picks always a good time fishing with the little ones.
Great to see the hard deck coming on. I was on Strawberry about mid-December last year with clear ice and all the pressure cracks going off…scary!
Noticed your pics are HUGE. Here’s a program to reduce them in size for faster uploading and viewing: http://www.shrinkpictures.com/
TiteLines!
Nice report, and nice suggestion! I would love to get on the hard deck this weekend, but am unable to do so. However, next sunday, the 13th. I am planning on Scofield for sure. With the thickness of ice now, plus one more week, do you think it will be safe for snowmobiles with 2 pachiderms riding it? I usually go out by the island.
Looks like you guys had a great time about how thick do you think the ice was ?
I would think that the ice being 6-8 inches now would be safe enough to go the island next week. But the lake as of today 12-5 still had some open spots of water and real ugly looking pressure cracks. We fished in madison bay just south of the docks 100 yards. Caught lots of planters and double that many chubs in 19 feet of water.More chubs for the burb. bash. Had the 2 boys with me it didn’t matter if it was a trout or a chub they had a ball. We measured the ice where we fished and it was 8 inches. And it was very active. We did also feel the quake that some one posted about.
Just another note to whom it may concern on the gadget section I posted instructions and pics on how to build a jet sled wind block hope this will help. I really enjoy mine.
We went up today non stop again, the little guy did alot of reeling today he even made me break out the tape on his wild Tiger that went from the hole into the wax worms knocked over the drinks and then back to the hole again. There was a solid 8 inches at the dam and the ICE was cracking and popping like usual. But all in all fishing was fast and the little guy had fun we may go up in the morning depending on the weather we got out of there just in time and hit snow right as we came out of the canyon. I would have took more pictures but I was to busy taken them of the hook.
